on August 28. Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj won the gold medal in a time of 13 minutes, 14.39 seconds, ahead of Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele and Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge. El Guerrouj also took gold in the men's 1,500 metres.
