CITY OF JOYCE

DUBLIN celebrated June 16 as the centenary of Bloomsday, the day on which James Joyce’s epic novel Ulysses is set. In Ulysses Joyce immortalised June 16, 1904, the day of his first date with the woman who later became his wife. Dubliners downed early morning pints of Guiness and ate a hearty breakfast in honour of Leopold Bloom who begins his momentous day with pork kidney fried in sizzling butter sauce and sprinkled with pepper.

The celebrations launched on February 2, Joyce’s birthday, brings together events ranging from art exhibitions to concerts. Some 40 countries from South Korea to Norway marked Bloomsday.
