Chandigarh, June 24
Two new games, hitherto unknown in this part of the
region, will make their debut in Chandigarh on June 26 when the city play host to the third National Gateball Championship and the second International Invitational Woodball Championship featuring several foreign players at Panjab University grounds.

Both gateball and woodball have their origin in Japan. While gateball took birth in 1947, thanks to the efforts of Washin Suzuki who developed the game in Hokkaido based on croquet, a game popular in Europe, woodball was invented rather late by Ming-Hui Weng and Kuang-Chu Young in 1990. The two hit upon the idea while planning a garden for their parents in Taipei City.

The equipment for woodball comprises a wooden ball, a bottle-shaped wooden mallet, and a gate which resembles two beer bottles and an inverted beer mug, conceptualised in the living room of Weng and Young where two beer bottles, a wine glass and a wooden ball were among the decorative pieces. Ever since, the shape of the equipment has undergone changes before the standard woodball set was accorded approval by the International Woodball Federation. A standard woodball course comprises 12 fairways.

Gateball, which involves mental and mild physical exercise, also has simple equipment comprising a stick with a cylindrical head and a wooden ball. The game is played in a small court which has three small gates and a goal pole.

According to coach Satwant Singh, woodball has already been recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The first World University Woodball Championship is scheduled to be held in Taiwan from September 4 to 7.

Chief referee and chairman of the technical board of the Gateball Federation of India Rajesh Paspulkar, who has been overseeing the arrangements for the twin meets at Panjab University along with officials of the Punjab and Chandigarh units, including Mr S.S. Sidhu, Major H.S. Bhullar, and Dr Swarn Singh Dhaliwal, told The Tribune that 22 states were affiliated to the GFI headed by Mr Ashish Deshmukh. The first and second editions of the gateball nationals were held at Nagpur in 2002 and 2003.

While gateball has eight members in a team, including three substitutes, woodball has six playing members.

Although the games are new to the region, these have generated a lot of enthusiasm among youngsters in Chandigarh. For the past few days, many boys and girls have been practising at the Panjab University grounds, trying to pick up the rudiments under the watchful eyes of Satwant Singh, Rohit Kumar and Rajesh Paspulkar. The practice sessions, at times, extend to several hours.

The visiting teams from all over India are being provided accommodation on the university campus and other places in the city. Mr Lal Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab, will inaugurate the meets on June 26.
