Farmers condemn Milkfed decision
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 16
The Punjab Dairy Farmers Association has condemned the decision of Milkfed to slash the procurement price of milk. Mr Daljit Singh, president of the association, said the decision was anti-farmer, illogical and contrary to the ground realities in the region. Alleging a nexus between bureaucrats and private milk plant owners, he said the prices had been lowered to benefit the latter.

It is ironical that Milkfed has chosen to reduce the prices while the government has been crying hoarse on the need for diversification. The farmers are already under debts, he said.

He said the cooperative body was aware of the fact that the production of milk was affected during the summer months and accordingly the prices were marginally raised to compensate the dairy farmers. This time around, the prices had been lowered dealing a crippling blow to them.

Mr Daljit Singh said to promote dairy farming Milkfed had raised the prices during winters and had assured the farmers that they would further hike the rates. Anticipating good times ahead, the dairy farmers had taken loans to expand their businesses but they had been left in the cold by this volte face, he pointed out.

The association has asked the government to free the cooperative from the clutches of bureaucrats and post only those officers who have specialised in cooperative management. It has been observed that bureaucrats tend to indulge in red tapism and ruin otherwise healthy outfits.

The government should also streamline the functioning of the milk plants in the state besides setting new ones with the state-of-the-art technology to make optimum use of the milk and its products which could reach the maximum number of people.
