Hizb militant among 4 killed

Srinagar, June 9
A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was among four persons killed and a CPM activist was injured in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since last night, official sources said today.

The Hizbul militant, Ghulam Hassan Khan alias Zahid, was killed in an encounter with troops of 42 Rashtriya Rifles at Nagbal village in Tral area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir last night, the sources said.

However, his accomplices fled under cover of darkness.

Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant, who was wanted in a large number of militancy-related incidents in the Tral belt.

The sources said shops and business establishments remained closed in the Tral township in the wake of the militant’s death.

Militants shot dead a youth Abdul Majid Dar, at Lassipora village in Kupwara district of north Kashmir last night. Dar was killed by gunmen when he was returning home from his fields, the sources said.

Two militants today took shelter in a mosque after a gunbattle with security forces in which one of their accomplices and a BSF jawan were killed in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Security forces laid siege to the mosque to flush out the militants, who were firing intermittently from the shrine.

Acting on a tip-off that militants were hiding in a house at Wohgund village in Kulgam, 75 km from here, the security forces raided the place.

The militants opened fire on the raiding party and tried to flee, sources said, adding that a militant and a BSF jawan were killed in the exchange of fire. Two militants ran towards a nearby mosque and took shelter there.

Militants shot at and injured a CPM activist, Mohammad Abdullah Bhat, at Litter village in Pulwama district of south Kashmir last night.

Bhat, a resident of Shath-Parraypora, was abducted by militants from his village and fired upon near Litter village. He was shifted to hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable, the sources said. — PTI

Indo-Egyptian music concert held

Srinagar, June 9
For the first time in history, Srinagar witnessed an unique confluence of musical traditions from India and Egypt when two internationally acclaimed music maestros, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and Georges Kazazian, enthralled the audience with their breath-taking performance.

The first-ever Indo-Egyptian grand cultural function held in Kashmir lasted nearly three hours last evening and attracted a galaxy of artists and music lovers besides tourists, including foreigners.

As part of a cultural conversation between India and Egypt the two ancient cultural identities in the world, share a chronological association, and this cross-cultural and cross-civilisation event was initiated to promote, highlight and understand the cultural ethos and philosophy of both countries, said Mr Ramesh Mehta, secretary of the state academy.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi and State Academy have devised many such events in near future, to foster ties between Jammu and Kashmir and other cultural identities, he added.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was the chief guest at the event organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and held at Tagore Hall in the heart of the city. — PTI
