Admn to close illegal guest houses from June 18
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 4
All illegal guest houses in the city have to go after June 18. The Chandigarh Administration will start the process of closing the guest houses which are operating from private residences and also those running from shopping areas without proper sanction.

This comes after a direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court with regard to the functioning of the guest houses in the city.

The Administration has formed a committee comprising The Assistant Estate Officer, the Land Acquisition Officer, the SDO (buildings) and SDO (Enforcement) to hear the appeal of each guest house owner.

From June 18 onwards the guest houses which are operating from commercial areas without having paid the conversion charge will not be allowed to continue. A week will be given to the owners of the guest houses to appear before the committee. The next two weeks will be given to the guest house owners to deposit the conversion charges. The money which may run up to Rs 10 lakh has to be paid in lump sum and no instalments will be allowed.

Several guest houses had opened in commercial areas after shop-cum-offices (SCO’s) were allowed to be used for all kinds of trades. The hotel industry comprising people who had paid huge sums to bid for plots in auctions protested. The Administration fixed a conversion charge for people wanting to use the SCO’s for such commercial use.
