Ludhiana, June 2
Aashna from Jalandhar and international Jagdeep Singh of Baba Lodhiana Academy have been selected to lead the Punjab girls and boy’s teams in the 55th Junior National Basketball Championship slated to be held at Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh from June 6 to June 13, according to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association.
A function was organised here today at the Guru Nanak Stadium where the players of the two teams were wished good luck for the forthcoming tournament by the office-bearers of the association. Mr Dhaliwal expressed the hope that the boys team with three international cagers in their ranks namely Jagdeep Singh, Yadwinder Singh and Taljinder Singh would retain the title which they had been winning for the past four consecutive years.
Mr Dhaliwal further said that similarly, the girls squad, having talented hoopesters in Kiranjit Kaur, Prabhjot Kaur and Taranjeet Kaur who attended the national camp recently was also likely to come out with flying colours this year. The Punjab girls had to be content with the bronze medal in the last edition of the championship.
Besides, Mr Dhaliwal, Mr Yashbir Walia,
treasure, PBA, Dr S. Subramanian, former director, NIS, Patiala, Mr Vijay Chopra, vice president, Ludhiana District Basketball Association and Mr Ashok Gupta from Kapurthala were present.
The members of the two teams are (boys)- Jagdeep Singh, Yadwinder Singh, Sahiljit Singh, Vijay Kumar, Gurbej Singh, Akash Kumar, Supreet Singh all from Baba Lodhiana Academy; Taljinder Singh from Ludhiana, Sweetpal Singh from Bathinda; Sukhpal from Faridkot; Mandeep Singh and Bhupinder Singh from Gurdaspur. R K Kalley from NIS, Patiala and Jagbir Puri will accompany the team as coach and assistant respectively.
Girls- Aashna, Saloni, Rishma from Jalandhar; Kiranjeet and Prabhjot Kaur from Baba Lodhiana Academy; Taranjit and Gagandeep Kaur from Ludhiana; Rajanpal and Annu from Kapurthala; Ritu from Gurdaspur; Gurdeep Kaur from Muktsar and Jythi from Faridkot. Harjinder Singh, SAI, PAU, Ludhiana and Kanwarjit Singh, SAI, Jalandhar will be the
coach and assistant coach, respectively, while Ms Mukti will accompany as manager.
