India has maximum oral cancer cases

Health professionals and voluntary organisations have planned various awareness programmes on tobacco across the national Capital on the World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

The Delhi Diabetes Research Centre (DDRC) has joined hands with the State Bank of India to start a month-long awareness and signature campaign aimed at the well-being of diabetic smokers. During the month-long campaign, the DDRC plans to cover hospitals, railway stations, bus terminals, colleges, health clubs and hotels and restaurants.

Volunteers will distribute leaflets about diabetes and hold slide shows to drive the message home. This will be followed by question and answer sessions. DDRC Chairperson Dr Ashok Jhingan says that several studies point to a definite relation between smoking and the development of diabetes. “The time has come for tobacco and its products to be listed as drugs and sold by a chemist on production of a certificate by an appropriate authority. Smoking reduces insulin sensitivity, aggravates insulin resistance, raises plasma glucose levels and thus produces overt diabetes. Patients suffering from deadly diabetes are not aware of the hazardous ill effects of smoking. Cigarette smoking is associated with high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It decreases levels of HDL cholesterol. The absence of good cholesterol makes a person vulnerable to heart attack. People with diabetes who smoke regularly are more likely to develop coronary artery disease, hypertension and stroke compared to non-smokers. Smoking increases the risk of death and the burden of morbidity from macrovascular complications in patients of diabetes.”

Dr Jhingan says that diabetic smokers are prone to develop stroke due to rupture of blood vessels of the brain. “Involvement of kidney has been reported as common in type -I diabetic patients who smoke. Smoking increases the risk of microalbuminuria in type-II diabetes (passing of protein in urine).

Smoking is also a documented risk factor for the development and progression of various types of neuropathy, which leads to numbness and pain in foot and legs. It is also associated with retinopathy as it reduces blood flow to the retina and can lead to blindness. Obesity is a risk factor for Type II diabetes. People with diabetes are at a greater risk of depression compared to the general adult population. It has been found that cigarette smoking is linked with the level of depression among people with diabetes.

Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Rohini, is also holding a public lecture on Monday forenoon to mark the World No Tobacco Day. Dr Y. P. Bhatia, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, says that the theme of the lecture is ‘Quit tobacco, Say ‘Yes’ to good health.

Onco surgeons, Dr A.K. Dewan, Dr K.K. Pandey, Dr S.K. Rawal are among those who will present their views on cancer and tobacco. The Health Minister of Delhi, Dr Yoganand Shastri, is the special invitee to the lecture at India International Centre on Lodhi Road. Dr Bhatia says that about 60 per cent of cancers in men are related to tobacco.

These include oral cancer, lung cancer and urological malignancies. Cancer Care India (CACI), an apex body of 22 cancer support groups in the country, plans to observe the World No Tobacco Day on May 31 in ten states. CACI and National Cadet Corps have already held two programmes this month. Mr P.K. Ghosh, General Secretary of CACI, says that cancer awareness campaign in ten States will emphasise the link between tobacco consumption and cancer. “India accounts for the largest number of oral cancer cases in the world because of high tobacco consumption.

We want to educate the NCC cadets in the 15 to 20 age group, who can then spread public awareness about cancer. We also want to focus on States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and North-East where tobacco consumption is very high. In North-East, the people eat Tambul, made by putting raw beetlenut under the ground and then consuming it in semi-rotten form.”

Hormonal therapy

The Army Research and Referral Hospital near Dhaula Kuan is holding a conference on the application of hormonal therapy in treatment of breast cancer on Sunday evening.

Prominent among those who will present their views at the conference are Dr Ashok Vaid, Medical Oncologist at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Dr Puneet Gupta, Head of Cancer Medicine at Dharamshila Cancer Hospital and Research Centre and Dr Hash Dua, Medical Oncologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

Commenting on the growing preference for sex hormonal therapy for breast cancer, Dr Gupta said, “People have realised that in certain settings, there exists an option of sex hormone therapy instead of chemotherapy as the first line of treatment in select group of patients. It may do better than chemotherapy in terms of lesser toxic effects, better tolerance, equivalent efficacy and better quality of life. It can also be used in early, locally advanced and metastatic settings. Breast cancer like prostate cancer is a sex hormone dependent cancer. Therefore, manipulation of sex hormone can lead to better cancer control, survival and quality of life. The sex hormone manipulation medicine avoids the fluctuation in the level of sex hormone, which in turn delays the growth of hormonal responsive cancer.

Therefore, only those patients with sex hormone receptors rich like estrogen receptor rich, progestron receptor rich and newly described S-2 protein rich tumours are suitable candidates for sex hormone therapy.”

Training institute by SB Group

Conceptualised on the lines of the ‘Gurukul’ model (residential education system), the institute has been rechristened the Rockland Institute for Research and Health Sciences. Padmashree Professor P.K. Dave, former Director of AIIMS, who is heading the faculty at Rockland Hospital as the Chairman of the Advisory Board, will head the newly set up institute in Ghamroj village on the outskirts of Gurgaon.

New Delhi, May 29
Delhi Administration hit back to hold Zakir Hussain College 1-1 to snatch a crucial point in a Group A match of the Senior Division DSA Institutional League Football Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Saturday.

In an even-paced match, both the teams muffed a number of chances from close range.

Zakir Hussain College called the shots in the first half, with their medios Fardeen Qureshi and Tikkam Singh Bisht initiating a number of good moves down the flanks. Eventually, Delhi Administration succeeded in netting the equaliser when striker Rajeev Bhalla’s angular shot hit the cross piece and bounced in, to the surprise of rival goaltender Lokesh Kurketi, in the 65th minute.

Delhi Administration then narrowly missed taking the lead when Bhupender Adhikari’s effort went slightly wide.
