Kinshuk, Alipt win tennis titles

Kinshuk Sharma and Alipt Sandhu bagged the under 18 section titles in the boys and girls categories, respectively, in the AITA Talent series tennis tournament. The event concluded here today at the CLTA Tennis Stadium, Sector 10.

Results: finals:

Girls Under 18 : Alipt Sandhu (CHD) b Isha Toor (CHD) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Boys Under 18 : Kinshuk Sharma (CHD) b Hazary Javed Akbar (PB) 6-2, 7-5. Girls Under 14 (Semi-Finals) :

Navjot Saini (Punjab) b Poorna (CHD) 6-4, 6-4.

Boys Under 14:

Mandeep Yadav (CHD) b Gurmohit Singh (CHD) 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

Girls Under 18 (Finals) : Alisha Talwar (Punjab) and Mallika Bubber (Punjab) b Alipt Sandhu (CHD) and Bahaar Paul (CHD) 7-6(5), 7-6(12).

Boys Under 14 (Finals):

Gurmohit Singh and Mandeep Yadav b Parul Verma and Anmol S. Ladhar 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Boys Under 18 (Finals) : Kinshuk Sharma and Izreek Singh b Manav Dhawan and Satvir Singh 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 7-6(3).

Sonalika taekwondo champ

Sonalika, a class V student of Shemrock Senior Secondary School, Sector 69, Mohali, has achieved laurels in Korean Martial Art, taekwondo. She along with other taekwondo students of the school has performed well in various tournaments, including the Seventh Punjab State Taekwondo meet, the national taekwondo meet and the Chandigarh State Taekwondo meet. Sonalika attributes her success to her instructor B.S. Handa, 4th Dan (World Taekwondo Federation, Korea). Other school students, who won gold medals in taekwondo are in Chandigarh state meet are Simardeep, Navpreet, Gurbir and Simran Chawla while silver medals were won by Hitesh and Babneet. Ramneek, Robin and Zorawar bagged a bronze medal each.

Air Commodore S.K. Sharma (retd), Principal of the Shemrock School said they offered specialised training in taekwondo apart from various other sport like basket ball, hand ball, kho-kho, carrom, table tennis and athletics.

Carrom coaching camp

The Panchkula District Carrom Association will hold a coaching camp from June 5 to 14 at Saupin’s School, Sector 9, Panchkula. According to Mr R.S. Yadav, general secretary of the association, the camp timings will be 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. In this camp, lectures on the Laws of Carrom will also be delivered by an international umpire. Patiala beat Zone B

Chandigarh, May 29
Mohit Mohindra, a Class VIII student of British Co-Educational, Patiala, was the star bowler for his side when he wrecked Zone B by claiming five wickets in the Punjab State Inter-District Under-15 Cricket Tournament for the Sushil Bali Trophy played yesterday at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. In reply to Patiala’s score of 252, Zone B were 173 all out and lost by 79 runs.

Brief scores: Patiala 252 all out in 89.2 overs (Kuwar Raina 118, Preet Kamal 60, Krishan 4 for 84, Vavshaj 4 for 64), Zone B: 173 all out in 50 overs (Jitender 60, Sandeep 31, Rajinder 13 n.o., Mohit Mohindra 5 for 50).
