ONGC move into Raghubir Singh cricket semis New Delhi, May 27 FCI won the toss and put ONGC into bat. ONGC were in serious trouble when they lost three key wickets, that of Virender Sehwag, Sandeep Sharma and Mithun Minhas, for 45 runs. But opener Gautam Ghambir blasted a stroke-filled century (129, 10x4, 2x6, 114b) and spinner Sarandeep Singh hit a fine half century (55, 5x4, 1x6) to prop up ONGC’s total to a handsome 281 for 8 in 40 overs. In reply, FCI were struggling at 138 for 8 off 22 overs when rain came calling. Gautam Gambhir was named the Reebok man of the match. There will be no match on Friday. Malviya Club take on Sonnet on Saturday. S Madras Club annex title An all-round display by Aditya Jain (42 and 3 for 26) and half century by Puneet Bisht (51, 8x4, 1x6) helped Madras Club defeat Sonnet Club by 63 runs and annexed the Sharma Sports Under-19 Cricket Tournament title at the Yamuna sports complex ground. Puneet Bisht was named the man of the match as well as the best batsman of the tournament. Naman Sharma was declared the best bowler while Aditya Jain was presented the sportsman of the tournament award.

Vijay Yadav Academy win Faridabad, May 27 Batting first, the `Nahar Singh’ boys made 219 for 6 in the limited over match. Sanjiv Gaur and Deepak Tyagi made 54 and 47 respectively. In response, the Vijay Yadav Academy reached the target by losing only four wickets. Sachin Goyal (54) and Saurabh Bhatnagar (47) remained top scorer and their partnership contributed as many as 105 runs. While Abhimanju made 32, Sameer Bhatnagar remained unbeaten on 37 for the winners. Veteran hockey player passes away New Delhi, May 27 Born in Peshawar, Pindi Dass was a versatile player who represented Services for over a decade, and played alongside Olympians Nandi Singh, Group Capt. R S Bhola and Hardayal Singh. Pindi Dass captained Southern Command and was lucky to play under legendary Dhyan Chand. He was very active till the very end, though he had gone totally blind a few years ago. His son Satish Khanna is a commandant with the Central Reserve Police Force |
FCI, Railway Board earn full points in DSA League New Delhi, May 27 Five-time champions FCI trounced Punjab National Bank 4-1, after being level 1-1 at half time. FCI forged ahead in the 5th minute through outside left Bhupender Rawat while Biren Mettai equalised for PNB two minutes later. On resumption, Bhupender Rawat, Trilok Singh Bisht and Gaimulan Kamei scored goals in that order for FCI. Railway Board blanked Bank of India 5-0. H. S. Bisht scored three goals in a row to record a hattrick. Rajesh Kumar and Vipin Rao accounted for the other two goals. PGAI Qualifying School from June 8 New Delhi, May 27 The tournament, featuring 274 players, will be held over two stages, with the top 50 golfers earning direct entry to events of the season. In view of the high number of entries, the first stage has been divided into two rounds, both of which will be played over 36 holes on a strokeplay format. While the first round of Stage I is scheduled for June 8 and 9, the second round will be played on June 11 and 12. From each of these rounds, the leading 40-45 players will qualify for the final Qualifying School, which will be held from June 16 to 19 over 72 holes on a stroke play format. Fifty-eight players, based on their rank in the money list (Order of Merit) of 2003-04 season, will be joined by 91 players from the pre-quarter Stage I and Stage II. The cut will be applied at the end of the two days (36 holes) and the top 70 players and ties will participate in the final two rounds. |
