2.57 lakh infants administered pulse polio drops
Our Correspondent

Meerut, May 25
The pulse polio drive on May 23 received poor response despite the improvement in weather conditions. Health and administrative officials pointed out that the summer vacation and the hot weather condition were responsible for the poor turnout.

However, when the correspondent of the NCR Tribune visited the area, Health official and volunteers at several booths were either not available or found fast asleep.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr A K Tyagi, told mediapersons that six lakh infants were targetted for the pulse polio drive. However, Dr Sukhbir Singh, incharge of the pulse polio drive, told the NCR Tribune that 2.57 lakh children were administered anti-polio drops on the first day, including 1.30 lakh in urban areas and 1.26 lakh in rural areas. A total of 1,008 teams were deployed at 1,751 booths in the district.

Every drag of cigarette contains 40 carcinogens

New Delhi, May 25
Smoking kills, and how. Each puff coats the lungs not only with tar, usually used to make roads, but also with a pesticide and a toilet cleaner.

In a run-up to mark the ‘’Anti Tobacco Day’’ on May 31, the Cancer Patients Aid Association has launched a ‘yellow ribbon day’ to increase awareness about the carcinogenic content in all tobacco products.

Talking to the media, Ms Niharika Raina of CPAA said, “Tobacco has been linked to cancer in several research studies and yet, people don’t realise the risk they are taking by smoking. Even passive smoking has proved to significantly increase the occurrence of cancer.”

“A cigarette contains 4,000 chemicals, of which 40 are carcinogenic substances like tar, DDT, a pesticide, ammonia, which is a toilet or floor cleaner and even naphthalene used as mothballs,” she said. — TNS
