Doctor pens tips on eye care ‘from the womb to the tomb’ New Delhi, May 21 To ensure vitality and health of our eyes a few things added to the daily routine can go a long way in preventing serious eye problems, say experts. It is keeping in view these small routine things that the author, Dr Markanday Ahuja, MS, a noted eye specialist of Rohtak and Vice-Chancellor, Shri Baba Mast Nath University, has collected all his experience and observations in dealing with more than 10 lakh patients and penned them down for the benefit of the general public, medical students, social workers, health freaks and all professionals, including medical doctors. The text has been kept very simple, difficult terminologies and long texts have been avoided and illustrations included for a non-medical person to understand. The book, “Eye Care from Cradle to Coffin”, covers basic chapters on anatomy and functioning of the eye, their protection from the womb to the tomb. Domestic eye care, occupational eye care, sports eye care, rural eye care, eye care in various seasons and festivals and correct ways for using eyes have been described. The effect of mind, sleep, music and dance on eyes is a revelation in this book. Chapters on Vaastu, the role of Sun and the moon, ethnic customs, ayurvedic herbs, ancient mantras provide a peep into the rich heritage of India. Care of eyes for women finds a special mention, including care and cautions in pregnancy, care and cautions in pregnancy, care at gymnasium/health club and a special word about care of eyelashes and eyebrows, including modern beauty techniques and applications, are worth reading. Food and supplements for good eyesight, yoga for betterment of eyes, eye exercises and good habits for better vision have been described in detail to make readers manage these at home. Trivial things like how to drop medicines in the eyes and common mistake in using eye drops have been stressed. Danger bells for these who are on systemic drugs and suffering from various diseases have been rung and frequency of eye examination described. A word of caution has been added for smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts and sexual deviants. Chapters on normal, abnormal/defective vision, their correction by spectacles, contact lenses and surgical modalities, including lasers, have been included. It also covers how to go about choosing spectacles and goggles out of an attractive, confusing and a large market. The commonly encountered eye problems such as eye infections, glaucoma, cataract, retinal disorders, especially diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, allergic eye diseases, eye injuries, eye strain, floaters, macular degeneration and squint have been dealt with, including their prevention. The importance of specialist consultation and frequency of consultation has been repeatedly stressed in various chapters. The chapters on alternative systems of medicine have been included to make people aware about alternative therapies, their real benefits and claims. These include ayurveda, acupuncture, acupressure, magnetotherapy, naturopathy, auto-urine therapy and power of ancient mantras from Chakshushya Upanishad. The author does not endorse them all but his hospital is making a serious effort to dig out if any mystery lies in them by way of regular research, experiences and observations on a large number of patients. With the increase in industrialisation the chapter on occupational eye hazards has been included where ways to provide safe working environment, especially for eyes, find a special mention. Computer related eye problems are also on the increase and these find an important reference, including the adjustments to be made at the work-station. In fact, the book starts with eye care in infancy and ends with eye care in old age and the care to be taken at the time of death because you may wish to donate your eyes or have a feeling that you should continue to see this world even after your death. In the end chapters on blindness and important terminologies have been added for the readers to know the magnitude of various types and incidence of blindness. |
