Three pimps get 7-year RI

New Delhi, May 21
Three women, running brothels in G. B. Road area in Central Delhi, have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of seven years for forcing minor girls into prostitution.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr. R. P. S. Teji, also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000 each on Bebi Jon, Meera and Shakila, who were arrested in 2001, after seven minor girls were rescued from their brothel.

Police said that on an information that some girls had been forced into the trade, Kamla Nagar police conducted a raid and rescued seven girls. The girls deposed that they had been forced into the immoral act by the accused.

Birju Maharaj gets Lifetime Achievement Award

Airtel, India’s premier mobile service provider, presented he Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the field of music and art to the world renowned maestro, Shri Birju Maharaj, at the awards ceremony function at Ashoka Hotel. The award was presented by Mr Sanjay Nandrajog, Director and CEO, North Central region, Airtel, along with sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

The Legends of India festival is a unique concept aimed at promoting Indian art and culture. The four-day festival, an annual affair, is in its sixth year of inception. The

Legends of India annual music festival is held to promote Indian music and dance and recognise the efforts of those individuals who have made a difference in the field. It is in recognition of this unrelenting effort in the promotion of Indian music and dance that every year an eminent artist from the field is conferred with the prestigious Legends of India Lifetime Achievements Award. Airtel is supporting this initiative as it is in keeping with its policy to promote arts and culture.

While presenting the award, Mr Nandrajog said, “Airtel is all about expressing oneself and we believe that music is the purest form of expression. It has always been our endeavour to promote the art and culture of the country and what better way than to commemorate the achievements of our musicians who have acted as the messengers of our culture.

We owe it to them for keeping our traditions alive not just in our eyes but internationally as well.”

Said Mr Dipayan Mazumdar, who conceptualized Legends of India, “It has taken six long years of very hard work to make Legends of India a brand that is recognised as one of the strongest in the Indian cultural milieu. And it would not have been possible at all except for the support that we have received from the corporate sector.”

Legends of India festival dates back to 1999 when it was started to promote and enhance awareness of traditional Indian art forms. It also provides a platform for established and upcoming artists to perform together.
