Industrial design
exhibition A three day exhibition of industrial design, by the first-year students of the Department of Industrial Design, School of Planning and Architecture, at the India Habitat Centre this week, was a big draw and left many visitors overawed by the sheer talent of the students. The evolution of the profession of industrial design is rooted in the industrial era of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century in Europe and the USA. It was the initiative of some sensitive artists, architects and engineers to make industrial manufactured products more marketable. Due to such beginning, the profession came to be known as Industrial Design. However over the years, there have been major changes in the ways products are conceived, manufactured, marketed and used. Currently, IT, communication, international travel and transport, and globalisation of business practices have led to the development of different paradigms of business and social practices that evolve and exist simultaneously. However, there are two factors that will always influence the way man-made products, services and environments are introduced - human beings and economic activity. It is because of these two factors that the paradigm of Industrial Design is a misleading one. Industrial Design now is an approach for the designing manmade environments and products with human users as the major focus. In order to fulfill this aim it adopts an eclectic and interdisciplinary route to materialize ideas and knowledge into marketable and sustainable products and systems Industrial Designers therefore are able to deliver user friendly products in competitive business environments on the one band and within the domains of human and social welfare on the others. |
play time Vividha - the ensemble is a group of seasoned professionals from fields as diverse as radio, banking and television, news reporting, creative writing, railways and films. Different folks and different strokes, but all bitten by the bug of histrionics. To the delight of Delhiites, together they combined to harmonise their notes and presented Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic, Devdas, a play, at the LTG Auditorium here. Devdas is an attempt to investigate the psyche of three major characters of Sharat Chandra’s all time classic ‘Devdas’. Keeping the content intact, it is an experiment with form. The novel has been dramatised several times, but this attempt strives to connect the audience to the innermost layers of the characters’ consciousness where they witness the spirit of questioning the rights and wrongs from different perspectives. Each character lays bare his or her heart and tries to justify their conduct. Instead of traveling in a linear time, the play makes ample use of flashbacks. Use of light and music further enhances the ‘stream of consciousness’ effect. |
