18 cagers selected for youth camp

Ludhiana, May 20
As many as 75 boys turned up for the trials conducted by the Punjab Basketball Association here today at the Guru Nanak Sports Complex. The five member panel, Sajjan Singh Cheema, S. Subramanian, Balkar Singh Brar, Gurdial Singh and Harjinder Singh, selected the following boys for the camp to be started here from May 24 prior to their participation in the 21st Youth National Basketball Championship to be held from June 20 to 26 at Gotan, Rajasthan.

The probables are: Sukhjinder Singh, Yadwinder Singh, Satinder Pal Singh, Jugraj and Amritpal Singh of Baba Ludhiana Academy; Paramveer Singh, Taranjeet Singh and Ankush Passi of Ludhiana; Sumit Nagpal and Vikas Kumar of Muktsar; Harkamal Singh and Gurvinder Singh of Kapurthala; Balraj Singh and Sukhjinder Singh of Mansa; Veerpal Singh of Gurdaspur; Gurvinder Singh of Ropar; Gurbej Singh and Kulwinder Singh of Amritsar.

Fencing coaching camps: The local District Fencing Association (DFA), has chalked out a plan to organise summer coaching camps in city schools. Mr A.K. Sharma, president of the DFA, said the association had selected four city schools where coaching would be imparted to the students to prepare them for competitions. These schools are Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines and St Thomas Senior Secondary School, CMC Hospital Road.

He said since fencing was a new game for the city residents, the association had picked up students for the camp and an NIS coach, Sanjeev had been deputed to train the students. The coach would give technical inputs to the beginners. Sports teachers of these schools would also be given tips during the camps so that they could acquaint themselves with this new game, Mr Sharma added.

Yoga contest

Ludhiana, May 20
More than 100 students took part in a one-day yoga competition for boys at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar here, today. The participants vied for honours in three age groups — under-11, under-14 and under-17, respectively.

In the u-11 category, Tarun impressed with his skills and he was followed by Udhay Sharma. Madhav finished at third spot. Shakti finished ahead of others to bag the title in the u-14 category, while the second and third positions went to Rishav and Gauarv, respectively. In the u-17 section, the top honours were bagged by Rahul Setia. Ashutosh and Gaurav finished second and third, respectively.

The panel of judges included Ms Harinder Kaur and Ms Anita, both physical education teachers of the local Government Girls Senior Secondary School, division no 3 and Ms Rajinder Kaur Walia, DPE, Government Senior Secondary School, Threekay.

Earlier, Mr K. C. Maini, secretary, BVM Trust, inaugurated the competition. Mr Mitter Sain presided over the inaugural function. Mr O. P. Sabharwal and Mr M M Bamba, members of the BVM managing committee, distributed the prizes.
