Florence Nightingale anniversary: Nurses air their grievances
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 12
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, which is also celebrated as the Nurses Day, members of the nursing community in the national capital got together to share their experiences.

A public hearing, which to many members was the first of its kinds, was held at the Lady Harding Medical College here today.

Addressing the concerns of these paramedics was the National Commission for Women Chairperson Dr. Poornima Advani.

Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary of the Delhi Nurses Union and Secretary General of the All India Government Nurses Federation Ms G.K. Khurana said, “‘Being prominently a women’s profession, nurses who work on shift duties with odd hours need security and it is up to the hospital authorities to take up this responsibility”.

Inaugurating the function by lighting a lamp in the name of the ‘lady with the lamp’, Nightingale, Ms Advani said, “I am surprised that till date no representation has been made to mark a National Nurses Day in the country. She went on to add, “You work night and day, in war and peace and despite the several directives issued by the government regarding adequate security within hospitals, help lines and more PCR vans, we must look at the harsh realities of today”.

She said that the NCW will submit a report of such public hearings to the government.

Referring to the professional hazards faced by the nurses, Mrs Takwal, President of the Delhi Nurses Union, said that hospitals have been given the status of an industry and according to the law there should be a crèche for every 30 women working, she also demanded a 24-hour crèche as most of them work all shifts.

Raising the issue of uniforms, Takwal said, “we have won the war regarding the uniform but our sisters in the armed forces are being forced to wear a different shade while elsewhere in the country, many have to wear the frock, a vestige of the colonial regime. It is up to the NCW now to put pressure on the government to set right this problem,” she said.

Among the other issues brought up by the nurses, the fact that the nurses fear reporting any incident of harassment because of possible repercussions was highlighted by one nurse from the Ram Mahohar Lohia Hospital. Sister Kala said, “We are the scapegoats everywhere. If a patient dies, the grieving relatives tend to blame us”. She cited incidents when some nurses have even been roughed up by the relatives.

“The security guards kept by the hospitals or even the fourth class employees report for night duty in a drunken state, putting the sole staff nurse in danger. I need not list the number of recent incidents that have been reported. All this shows that it is up to the hospital administration to ensure our security”, she said.

It was also pointed out that those who dare to report to higher authorities are not spared. “ I request that those who take action also think and do something for the future security of the victim.

Most of the times, the culprit gets away free and in fact it is the victim who quits her job,” she said.

Bhaskar Pillai qualifies NCA coaches’ course
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 12
Former North Zone player and Delhi Ranji Trophy captain K Bhaskar Pillai has qualified for the Level-2 Coaches’ Course, conducted by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, at Bangalore from Mary 28 to April 3.

NCA vice-chairman C K Khanna, who is also the vice-chairman of the Communication and Co-ordination Committee of the BCCI, said Bhaskar Pillai, along with Suresh Luthra, are the two from Delhi to qualify the Level-2 Coaches Course of the NCA.

Bhaskar was an outstanding cricketer, a batsman of class, who was unlucky not to don the India colours. When he was selected for an one-day international at Jammu, the match was cancelled due to rain.

It is a singular achievement for Bhaskar as many former Test players have failed to qualify such courses and also the umpires’ examination conducted by the BCCI. Bhaskar, employed with SAIL, has been a regular member of the Sonnet Club for a number of years, and has an astute cricketing brain. If more and more former players come forward to attend such courses, youngsters would have the privilege of learning the basics from those who have played cricket at the highest level.

With cricket academies and coaching institutes mushrooming in Delhi, cricket coaching has become a ‘big business’ with ill-equipped coaches fleecing gullible parents. It is, therefore, a farsighted move by the NCA to conduct coaching courses to turn out coaches with proper grasp of the nuances of cricket coaching.
