Sonia can’t feel for Indians,
says Sushma

Policemen at receiving end

Election time means trouble for policemen who have either affiliation or sympathy for the ruling political party. Both IPS and Provincial Police Service (PPS) officers are at the receiving end for their obvious proximity to the ruling party. Mr Mukhwinder Singh Chhina, who was shifted from Jagraon to Moga a few months before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections, has become the third district police chief in Punjab to be transferred by the Election Commission on complaint basis.

World Asthma Day
Suffering from asthma? keep dogs, cats out

In India, about 5 to 10 per cent children suffer from asthma. The percentage is far less in adults. Just 2 per cent suffer from the allergy. The problem of asthma was worse in Bangalore and Trivandarum. About 18 per cent cases were reported from the two cities. In Delhi, just 10 per cent of the population suffered from the malady, compared to 4 per cent in Chandigarh.

Wage hike eludes Admn staff

A proposed hike in the salary of employees of the Chandigarh Administration and its boards and corporations has been delayed. The hike will be implemented only when the same is by the Punjab Government also.

No headway in Simran murder case
Chandigarh, May 4
The Chandigarh Police has claimed that trail has turned cold in the sensational day-light murder of an MSc (IT) topper Simran on July 17 last year. Simran was stabbed five times at her residence in Sector 22. The police claims that it has interrogated as many as 70 persons for possible clues leading to the killer of the girl but has got no positive leads so far. “But we continue to follow new leads, whenever they surface,” the police said.

Cash snatched from Panchkula resident

Three youths riding a Hero Honda motor cycle allegedly beat up a Panchkula resident and snatched a bag containing Rs 5,000 from him near the transport chowk traffic lights’ point here last evening.

The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation has generated a record profit of Rs 11.22 crore during the financial year 2003-04, according to the working results of CITCO officially released here today.

The University Grants Commission has given approval to the grant of service benefits to “outsiders” joining Panjab University as Readers for the purpose of promotion under the Career Advancement Scheme. The provision would come into force from March 13, 2004.

Rock Rovers outplayed ITBP to win the title in the Second Dharam Singh memorial six-a-side hockey tournament played here today at the Sector 18 hockey stadium. In the final match, Rock Rovers downed ITBP 12-8 while till half time, ITBP were leading at 5-3.

300 take part in Roger Bannister race

As many as 300 athletes took part in the fourth Roger Bannister one-mile race held at Lake Club here today. In the under-14 boys’ section, Nitin Chadha of New Public School, Sector 18, secured the first place in the 2km race while in the girls’ section Jyoti Thaleran of Government Girls Senior Secondary school, Sector 20, was the winner.
