645 patients examined at Rauni medical camp

Ludhiana, March 30
The Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), in association with the Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Rauni, held a one-day medical and dental camp at Rauni village. Consultation, treatment and medicines were provided free of cost to patients at the camp. The committee also arranged a free langar for the patients. A team of 22 doctors from nine specialities and 25 staff members of the CMCH participated in the camp.

As many as 645 patients were given medical advice in various specialities, including dental, paediatrics, gynaecology, surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, ophehalordogy, dermatology and general medicine.

Mr Manohar Singh, president of the committee presented with trophies and saropas to the CMCH team. He said the objective of these camps was to provide treatment to villagers at their doorsetps.

Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent, CMCH, said people living in rural India were deprived of appropriate treatment and hygienic living conditions, which made them more susceptible to diseases.

The CMCH, keeping in mind its motto of care and commitment, had worked out many strategies for peripheral areas of the Ludhiana, The implementation of these strategies had already started, he added.

Experts give tips to ophthalmologists

Ludhiana, March 30
The Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society, in collaboration with Gurdev Hospital, organised a state-level workshop here yesterday. It was attended by around 120 delegates.

Dr J.S. Thind from Jalandhar, Dr Kapil Vohra from Ambala and Dr K.P.S. Milk from New Delhi gave practical tips for the benefit of ophthalmologists.

The scientific session was conducted by Dr Ravijeet Singh form Dr Daljit Singh Eye Hospital and Prof Dr G.S. Bajwa from New DMC, Ludhiana. Meanwhile, Bausch and Lomb India today launched the India Phaco Experts Club, which comprises a select group of expert cataract surgeons.

GNIMT athletes score a hat trick

Ludhiana, March 30
The local Guru Nank Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town, secured 69 points to win the overall championship for the third successive year in the 7th annual athletics championship of the Punjab Technical University held on March 26 and 27 at the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib.

GNIMT athletes reaped a haul of 22 medals, including 12 gold, besides overall athletics trophy. Navneet bagged 5 gold medals (200 m, 800 m, 100 m hurdles, high jump and relay race) while Simrat won three gold (long jump, triple jump and relay race) and as many silver (100 m, 200 m and javelin throw).

Another student of the institute, Harpreet Kaur won one gold (relay) and two silver medals (400 m and 1500 m ) and two bronze medals (100 m hurdles and 800 m). Baldeep Kaur finished runner up in two events and had to content with silver medals in shot put and discus throw.

For their outstanding performance, Navneet (20 points) and Simrat (19 points) were declared best and second best athletes of the meet in which more than 1,000 students of over 50 affiliated colleges of the Punjab Technical University took part.

The president and general secretary of the GNIMT have joined Director, Dr A.S. Bansal in congratulating the athletes for creating history by winning the championship for the third consecutive year. They appreciated the teachers and coaches for the hard work put in by them in preparing the students to win laurels to the institute and the city as well.

Shivani, Manuj adjudged best athletes

Shivani Sharma and Manuj Uppal of the BAMC, Daudhar, secured 56 and 30 points, respectively, and were declared best athletes among girls and boys in the second annual sports meet of the Shaheed Kartar Singh Ayurvedic Medical Colleges and Hospitals held from March 24 to 28 at Sarabha, about 20 km from here. The BAMC, Daudhar, also annexed the overall trophy in this five-day meet in which colleges from Punjab and Haryana took part.

29 selected for cricket coaching

Forty players (u-15 years) turned up for the trials conducted here today at the Arya College for Boys ground by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA). Of these, 29 were selected for the regional coaching centre being run by the association.

According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, general secretary, LDCA, a panel of four selectors — Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, Mr Lokesh Khanna, Mr Pawan Pandey and Mr Naresh Marwaha — shortlisted the young players. They will to undergo coaching before they participate in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Championship for the Sushil Bali Trophy scheduled to begin from April 13.
