Q My operating system is '98 SE and modem PC tel 56 KBPS. Where can I find the download of PCTel modem driver model "pct688t." Please tell me the Website where from I can download this driver for free.

Tajinder Kumar Naangal, Chandigarh

A PC Tel is only a brand and what matters in case of modem is the chipset used in it, as drivers are being made for the chipset and not for the brand, which only customises the driver. Normally, in these modems, Motorola chipset was being used. You can try using Motorola SM56 PCI Chipset driver for your modem. Hopefully, this should work.

Q The Internet speed in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh, is very low, and dial up is the only medium available. How can the Internet access speed be increased by using two modems with two phone lines on the same computer? I have connected two modems, one internal and another on com2, both with two independent phone lines, logged on with two different Internet accounts (obviously using two independent dial-up connections). Both connect but there is no change in the access speed. On seeing the connection status, one was found active while the other was showing no change in its 'received' or 'sent' bytes, i.e. the other connection was not contributing in the surfing speed. Please suggest a solution.

Sagar, JTO, BSNL, Keylong

A There are many issues related to the Internet bandwidth. If the Internet speed at the exchange level is poor, then it could be due to old and outdated exchanges like E10B or the older ones. At some remote places even the old style manual exchanges are also functional, which are detrimental to the Internet bandwidth. The performance of the Internet is normally good in exchanges like EWSD. Other than the telephone exchange, the connectivity of the exchange with the main cable is also important. As far as connecting two modems are concerned, the technique involved is called modem teaming or modem bonding. Under this technique, two modems are bonded in such a way that the load gets distributed on both modems, rather than the traffic routed through one modem as is the case in the conventional method. For using this, you would need some software like mid-point modem teaming software. If you try to connect two modems normally, then the traffic would be routed through one modem only and when one stops, the other would get functional and thus it would not be simultaneous. This solution is possible through multilinking also, if the ISPs provide such facility for multilinking.

Q I have a PC with Celeron processor 566 MHz, 20 GB HDD and Windows Me operating system. I have two partitions on my hard disk - C: (2 GB) and D: (18 GB). When I run diskscan, the system shows 16,886 bytes on D: in bad sectors. Can bad sectors be fixed? Please guide.

P.S. Bal, Ludhiana

A Bad sectors can be fixed in many ways. The first and the most common method is the low-level formatting of the hard disk. By low-level formatting, the entire disk is reformatted with fresh sectors and thus the bad sectors are eliminated. Other possible solutions are using disk utilities, which fixes the bad sectors. However, in later cases, the bad sectors are not eliminated completely and may resurface again as they have a nature of expanding.

Q I have a Dell Dimension 8,200 with a 120 GB hard drive and have XP installed. When I try to run error check, it starts. After I restart the computer, it gets to Stage 2, stops and a blue stop error page comes up for about 2 seconds. Then the computer restarts and the process starts all over again. The only way I can get out of this cycle is press F8 when the Dell screen comes up. I have replaced the hard drive, reinstalled the operating system many times and nothing seems to work. What is happening and how do I get things to work right?

S. Meek, Washington State, USA

A You need to mention the exact error message, which you get on the blue error message screen. This is the information that holds the key to troubleshoot your problem. However, from the face of it, it appears that the problem is due to some bad software, which is forcing the shutdown when checked upon. Check out if you have installed an older version of software. Or there may be hardware, which is not properly installed or installed with wrong set of drivers. Try these and send the exact error message if the problem still persist.

Q I want freeware that can act as my PC security guard. That is if anyone, in my absence, works on my PC, I should come to know about all their activities. I should know what anyone does on my PC in my absence. Can you please guide me about software of my choice?

Rohit Sharma, Chandigarh.

A There are many software available on the Internet for such purpose. However since all these software are third party software so quite a few of them are spy software also. The best way is however, to hide your folders and create separate login identity for the users. If you have XP, then you can also control the usage by other users of the computer by allowing them limited access. I think instead of using a third party software, its better to go in for solutions mentioned above.

Q I have replaced my 10 GB hard disk with 80 GB Samsung (Puma). I have SiS 810C motherboard, P3 533 MHz processor and 128 (64+64) MB RAM. Though my RAM is 128 MB it shows 120 MB. My problem is, after installing XP on my C: my system automatically gets restarted without warning. Moreover, while accessing the Net from my XP platform it always shows RPC Fault warning message after sometime of surfing. A countdown from 60-1 begins and my system is rebooted. And when I try to work from my NT 2000 Advance server which is in my D: it sometimes shows, "Dumping physical memory and then starts counting from 1 to 100. Then it gets rebooted." Why is this happening? Is there any hardware compatibility problem? Or do I have a faulty HDD or RAM?

Diptanjan Mukherjee, Kolkata.

A There is absolutely no problem in your system. Regarding your query for 120 MB RAM, it is due to the 8 MB memory shared by AGP card, which is being reserved for display and the balance 120 MB is shown for other operations. So, this is quite normal.. Regarding your second query, you need to install the latest security patch from Microsoft for Windows XP. The security hole on your system returns the error message about RVC host and in turn shuts down the PC. So, there is neither hardware compatibility issue nor any problem related to HDD or RAM.

Q My system configuration is Windows Me, 40 GB HDD and 128 MB RAM. I am a student and having problem with Compaq Personal Basic. When I save a file it replies disk full and doesn't open a saved file. It is located on local disk C: and is 60 per cent free. Please help.

Gurmehar Singh, Hoshiarpur

A Please run disk cleanup wizard on your computer and also make sure that the folders you are trying to write in are not write-protected. Cleaning up the clutter on your hard disk would improve the performance of the computer and also create more disk space. Regarding the disk full problem, changing the attributes of the folder/drive (C: in your case) would solve the problem.

Q I have a branded HCL PC with the following configurations: P4, 2 GHz and 120 MB RAM. I have a Reliance Internet connection. My problem is while doing video chat, I can't see the other person but he can see me. I have checked all settings of my Webcam and Yahoo! messenger but the problem still persists. Please advice.

Sunveer Singh, Ludhiana

A There does not seem to be any problem with your Webcam setting as the person at the other end is able to see you. However in order to solve your problem, you should first uninstall Yahoo! messenger and then download a fresh copy of the latest version of Yahoo! messenger and then install it. This will solve your problem.

Q I have an assembled PC with the configuration P4, 2.66 GHz, 256 RAM, d_ling motherboard, 40 GB Seagate 7200 rpm of 4 partitions - A, B, C, D, E, F, LG CD Writer, 1.44 FDD.

1. When I perform scandisk, it displays the message in the summary that scandisk has found errors in this drive and automatically fixes them but when I perform the scandisk again it displays a message that scandisk has not found anything in this drive.

2. Is there is any software that can fix the bad sectors of the HDD? Please suggest software and the name of the Websites from where I can download it free of cost.

Ankur Marwaha, Amritsar.

A Regarding your first problem, the very purpose of scandisk is to scan the hard disk and troubleshoot any problem found on the hard disk. Normally as a default setting, the scandisk automatically solves the problem without the user interference. Therefore it is not essential that the same problem should come up, when you run scandisk again. So, if you repeat scandisk and it does not return any problem, then this is very obvious and does not represent any problem.

About your query for free software for treating bad sector, I have not seen some real good quality software for maintenance of disk, which are available for free. Though you can find many on the Web by searching on Google. My suggestion is go for quality software as this is a critical operation.

Q I have just one telephone line and an Internet connection. Many times it happens that while using the Internet my phone line remains busy and so I miss important calls. I want to know is there any software/arrangement that may indicate that someone is making a call so that I may log off from the Internet and attend the telephone call.

Aamit, Mumbai.

A Solution to your problem is simple and is a part of the basic feature of your telephone. All you need to do is enable call waiting on your telephone line and as soon as you get a call you will be automatically disconnected from the Internet and can attend the call. You do not need any software or hardware for this purpose. Get in touch with your service operator to help you enable call waiting feature on your telephone number.
