Temirbaev beats Laxman to share lead
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 16
Grandmaster Serik Temirbaev of Kazakhstan joined overnight leaders Pavel Kotsur and Saidali Iuldachev in the lead on 7.5 points after beating triple IM norm holder RR Laxman in the ninth round of the second Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament at the Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra at Panchkuian Road in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The three leaders are followed by a pack of eight players, including Koneru Humpy, former Commonwealth champion Dibyendu Barua, R. B. Ramesh and Surya Shekhar Ganguly. Two more rounds remain in this Rs 4 lakh prize money tournament.

The day witnessed a flurry of International Master norms being made after Laxman achieved it, even though he lost his game. The big gainer of the day was Md Javed of Bangladesh, who, despite his mediocre ELO rating of 2150, made his maiden international norm, after an impressive performance. Javed took a quick draw with Saptarshi Roy Chowdhary, who is awaiting confirmation of his IM title.

Aarthie Ramaswamy also achieved her IM norm as she took a cue from Javed and followed suit against IM DK Sharma. Manthan Chokshi, an unassuming young man from Gujarat, also cashed in on his norm opportunity and defeated IM Neeraj Kumar Mishra, who played white.

Top-seeded Kotsur took a safe route for the third round in succession and settled for truce with GM Safin Shukhrat of Uzbekistan. Iuldachev also settled for a quick draw against defending champion R B Ramesh.

Amongst the Indian GMs in the fray, national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly scored a clinical victory over GM norm holder D. V. Prasad. Prasad fell under pressure in the middle game, and could not recover thereafter.

Barua was lucky to score over young IM Deepan Chakravarthy, who missed his chances, while Humpy defeated IM P Konguvel. Sandipan Chanda shared points with S Satyapragyan.
