As many as 25 persons donated blood at a one-day blood donation camp organised by the veteran social organisation, Samaj Sewa Samiti, in coordination with the District Red Cross Society on the premises of Sant Guru Charan Dass Charitable Hospital, Gita Bhawan Mandir here yesterday.

Mr Shashi Karan Naasa and Mr Hem Makkar, social activists of the samiti, were the first who donated blood at the camp. Both were followed by other members of the samiti. Mr S. K. Arora and Mr Manu Dev Dewan, veteran social leaders of the region, were present on this occasion.

As many as 1,242 patients suffering from various diseases were examined and treated at a one-day health check-up camp organised by the Samaj Sewa Samiti here yesterday.

According to a press note released by the samiti, well-known doctors also carried out ECG tests, blood group and blood sugar tests and X-rays in the camp. The patients were, however, charged subsidised rates for the X-rays and other tests.

The patients were given medicines worth about Rs 50,000 free of cost. The doctors also promised to provide subsidised medicines to the patients having slips of the samiti for two days more if they visited their clinics and nursing homes for check-up.

This is the first ever camp organised by the samiti here.

Similarly, the samiti had been distributing quilts and blankets among the poor and deserving persons every year during the winter season.

Kotsur, Iuldachev maintain lead
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 15
Grandmasters Pavel Kotsur of Kazakhstan and Saidali Iuldachev of Uzbekistan maintained their joint lead atop the tables after the conclusion of the eighth round of the second Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament at the Bapu Sewa Samaj Kendra at Panchkuian Road in New Delhi on Monday.

Both the leaders are clubbed together on seven points. They are followed by GM Serik Temirvaev of Kazakhstan, GM Safin Shukhrat of Uzbekistan, defending champion R B Ramesh, IM CS Gokhale, IM D V Prasad and IM norm seekers R R Laxman and R Balasubramanian, who all have 6.5 points each in their kitty.

With just three rounds remaining in the Rs 4 lakh prize money tournament, the battle is likely to heat up for the winner’s purse of Rs 1 lakh.

The top board game between Kotsur and his teammate Temirbaev turned out to be a damp squib as they settled for a quick draw.

Iuldachev decided to fight it out against Balasubramanian but could not make any headway as the latter played solidly with the pieces.

Employing the Reti opening, Balasubramanian maintained the dynamic equilibrium for a long time and drew the game after an intense struggle.

The Indian GMs had a good day with only national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly missing out on beating talented youngster Deep Sengupta, who gave very little chance to his opponent. Ganguly employed the Berlin defence, hoping to catch Sengupta off-guard in the end game, but timely exchanges only led the game to a level position where the draw was agreed to.

R B Ramesh had a smooth sailing over IM Neeraj Kumar Mishra, whose opening mistakes from the black side of a Sicilian Taimanov cost him dearly. Ramesh seized the initiative in the middle game and a direct assault on the black king proved decisive.

Former Commonwealth champion Dibyendu Barua defeated IM Atanu Lahiri, Sandipan Chanda put it across Laisram Imocha while Koneru Humpy accounted for K Visweswaran in other important games.

Water, power tariff will go up in Delhi, claims BJP
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 15
The Delhi BJP president, Dr Harshvardhan, termed the Congress government in Delhi as the “most anti-consumer regime” of the country.

He claimed that prices of electricity and water would be raised by the Sheila Dikshit administration immediately after the Lok Sabha poll.

“The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has already got permission to hike power prices and this will be done immediately after the poll,” he claimed.

Dr Harshvardhan alleged that the Delhi government had privatised water supply through the “back door” by engaging a French company for the Sonia Vihar project.

Criticising the state government for going ahead with the Unit Area Method for determination of property tax despite opposition from many quarters, dr Harshvardhan claimed that taxes would go up significantly in middle and lower income areas.

The Delhi BJP chief said district consumer forums had a huge backlog of cases and the State Consumer Redressal Commission, an appellate body, was without a president.

He said a delegation of BJP’s Mahila Morcha met Ms Dikshit today and handed over a memorandum demanding protection of consumer rights.
