Dravid finds ‘media hype’ good
build-up for series New Delhi, March 8 In an interview with the CNN, Rahul Dravid said the hype was expected because “we don’t play that often. So when we do play each other, suddenly, it gets hyped up and blown out of proportion”. However, Dravid cautioned that the series should not be “blown out of proportion” and “blown out of context”. “People should realise that at the end of the day, it is a game of cricket, and we are going to play a cricket series.” Dravid said he was eagerly looking forward to the cricket series as “from my personal point of view, it’s quite exciting to be able to play the series because it’s one country I haven’t toured and played a Test match in”. Dravid, speaking to the CNN Bureau chief in Delhi, said the series will generate more interest than probably any other series “I would have played in or the team would have played in. So, we will have to learn to deal with that when we get there and I think the important thing is to try and recognise that we got to try and play good cricket, focus on the cricket and enjoy the tour”. He said it was important to “learn to enjoy the cricket, learn to enjoy the people, learn to enjoy the country and stick to our basics. At the end of the day, cricket is a game, it’s a sport: you win some, you lose some. The Sun comes up the next morning. As simple as that”. Dravid admitted that the players raised “a few concerns” regarding the security arrangement, though he conceded that “I’am not an expert on security, neither are the players”. He admitted that the players “raised a few thoughts and they have been looked into. We have been given to believe that they have been looked into. And that’s done, the matter is closed. We go on to do what we know best now, which is planning and preparing for a cricket series”. Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said he would take the series “just as a game. Don’t take it like war. Just take it relaxed because we are going to play sports”. Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shehryar Khan said “this is the most important cricket tour that we’ve had in our 57-year history. And it’s mammoth because the public interest has grown so much both in India and in Pakistan. And it is a kind of mania with our public.” |

MVC report on property tax passed, Opposition cries foul New Delhi, March 8 The new scheme of the property tax collection will come into force from April 1. The leader of Opposition, Mr Subhash Arya, and other members of the BJP, wanted a discussion in the House on the MVC report as they wanted to remove certain major anomalies, which would adversely affect the poor people. Calling it a case of highhandedness, the BJP accused the Congress of passing the report without sufficient discussion in the House. He expressed his surprise that an important agenda had been passed without taking the views of the Opposition parties into considerations. He alleged that while the rich people in many areas would gain, the poor people who live unauthorised and resettlement colonies would adversely suffer. Besides, village inhabitants who were exempted from the tax earlier have been included in the new scheme of the tax collection. The announcement of the Delhi Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, that group housing societies and Residential Welfare Associations (RWA) would be given rebate of 35 per cent if they submitted the tax jointly, finds no mention in the report, it was alleged. It was also alleged that senior citizens, physically challenged and women who were earlier given a rebate of 30 per cent, finds no mention in the report. However, the Chairman of the Standing Committee, Mr Mukesh Goel, clarified that under the Unit Area Method scheme, senior citizens, women and physically challenged had been provided a rebate of 30 per cent if the property was self-occupied. In the light of Section 177 of the DMC Act, it was proposed that the same rebate should be given to ex-servicemen having self- occupied properties, he clarified. As far as the Chief Minister’s assurance in connection with the RWAs and GHS, the Corporation will look into this so as to incorporate provision to give rebate to them, it was clarified. |
Admn dithers over action against errant sarpanch Rewari: The alleged occupation of
panchayati land by the Sarpanch and certain other members of his
family in Lodhana village under Bawal block of the district has
seemingly created an unsavoury as well as ticklish situation for the
district administration. The administration apparently dithered in
launching prompt and appropriate action against the village Sarpanch
even when it had been officially established beyond any shadow of
doubt that he was in illegal possession of the panchayati
land. Things started hotting up when a complaint in this regard was
made by Mr J.S.Yadav, president of the village welfare committee, to
the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) here in December 2003. Mr Yadav
specifically complained that the Sarpanch, Mr Dhir Singh, was in
illegal occupation of panchayati land measuring about one kanal on
which sarson had been sown. OC |
