Ramgarhia College wins music trophy

Ludhiana, February 23
Students from more than eight local colleges participated in inter-college music competition at the local DD Jain Memorial College for Women. The programme was a joint venture of the Departments of Vocal and Instrumental Music. Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister for Printing and Stationery, was the chief guest.

Mr and Mrs Rakesh Pandey were received by Mr Narinder Kumar Jain, president of the managing committee of the college and the Principal, Mrs Kamla Jain. Inderjit Hasanpuri, a lyricist, was the guest of honour. The programme started with the lighting of a traditional lamp by Mr Pandey.

The teams contesting for the DD Jain memorial trophy were in the ghazal singing, folk singing and recital of a ‘dhun’ on the sitar categories. The judges for the competition were Dr Sureshwar Shamra, Dr Manmohan Singh and Mr Ramish Sharma. It was a keenly fought contest. Hassan also enthralled the audience with his composition.

Mr Jain and other members of the managing committee of the college thanked Mr Pandey for sanctioning a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the college.

Following are the results of the competitions: Geet-ghazal category — Arshpreet of Ramgarhia Girls College 1, Monika of Master Tara Singh College for Women 2 and Himani of Khalsa College for Women 3. The consolation prize went to Nidhi of DD Jain College for Women. Folk song — Gulrej Akhtar of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women 1, Renu Bala of Ramarhia College for Women 2 and Amarpreet of SCD Government College for Boys 3. The consolation prize went to Simarjit of DD Jain College for Women. Light instrument ‘dhun’ — Babita of Government College for Women 1, Preet Gupta of Khalsa College for Women 2 and Bhagwant Kaur of DD Jain College for Women 3. The consolation prize was won by Harman Kaur of Ramgarhia Girls College. The running trophy was won by Ramgarhia College for Girls.

SDP college holds extension lecture

Ludhiana, February 23
The Postgraduate Department of Hindi, SDP College for Women, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture today at the seminar hall of the college. It was part of the series being organised by various departments of college.

Dr Suresh Chander Vatsayan, former Professor and Head of the Department of Hindi, Government College, Ludhiana, was the resource person. He spoke on National Conscience and Modern Hindi Poetry.

Pulse Polio Campaign: Twentyfive NSS volunteers of Government College here took part in the Pulse Polio Campaign that started on Sunday and would continue till Tuesday. The students gave polio drops to children of slum areas. They also visited cinemas and marriage palaces in this regard.

Fee hike resented: The proposal of Panjab University, Chandigarh, to hike fee of professional courses by 35 per cent and of graduation and postgraduation courses by 10 per cent in the coming session has invoked stiff opposition from students.

The Punjab Students Union have criticised the decision. Mr Harpreet Zeerakh, state unit president of the union, stated this in a press note issued on Monday.

The students felt that the hike will make these courses out of bounds for a majority of students.

The students also criticised the attack on Mr Joginder Azad, leader of the Democratic Teachers Union , Khanna, by certain persons.

Lecture held: An extension lecture on “Interpersonal comparison in transactional analysis” by Dr M.A. Zaheer, former head and Dean, Department of Business Administration, Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, was organised by the Department of Economics, Kamla Lohtia S.D. College, Daresi Road, Ludhiana, on the college premises on Monday. Principal B.D. Budhiraja advised the students to get familiar with the content of the abovesaid topic.

Resource person M.A. Zaheer focused his lecture on various aspects of human behaviour and its relation with transactional analysis. He was presented with a memento.

Inter-college fest on Feb 27

Ludhiana, February 23
Ehsaas-2004, an inter-college cultural festival, will be held at Punjab College of Technical Education on February 27.
Forty teams from colleges of Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi will compete for 15 events. A Pakistan delegation from Islamabad and Lahore, comprising 20 students and five faculty members, will also participate in the competition. Mr Bir Devinder Singh, Deputy Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, will inaugurate the function.

Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, former Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, and former vice-president, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, will release a souvenir.

The fine arts events will include face painting, flower arrangement and mehndi. Literary events will include just a minute, dumb charades, turn coat, quiz, sell it and portfolio management. Besides, there will be contests for cultural events like duet acting, dance, song, group dance, choreography and fashion show.

A car rally from Ludhiana to Khanna will be organised two days before the festival in which students of the college along with the staff will participate.

Writing contest winners

Ludhiana, February 23
The results of Reflections 2003-04, a regional contest on article and feature writing organised by the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT) at Model Town recently, were declared here today.

Entries had been invited from various schools and colleges in two categories. The first category included Plus Two students while the second category included undergraduate and post-graduate students. The contest received an overwhelming response and all entries were evaluated by a panel of judges.

In the plus two category, all winners were from Ludhiana. Kanu Syal from BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School was adjudged the best. Sagar Garg of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School and Shipla Makkar of DAV Public School were declared second and third, respectively.

In the college category, Harjot Kaur of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, stood first. Jyotika and Sakshi Gupta, both students from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, stood second and third, respectively.

Dr A.S. Bansal, Director, GNIMT, has congratulated the prize winners. He said the contest was organised to encourage the young minds to inculcate the habit of impressive, creative and effective writing. He said the contest was organised under the aegis of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), students’ chapter of the GNIMT.

GMT students honoured

Ludhiana, February 23
The management, staff and students of GMT Senior Secondary School organised their annual prize distribution function here last evening.
Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Minister for Higher Education, Punjab, was the chief guest. Dr T.P. Singh, Dean, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, was the guest of honour.

The function began with a shabad, followed by a cultural show by students. A choreographic performance by nursery students on Indian marriage system stole the show. Senior students depicted the need for peace for better tomorrow through a play based on riots and racial discrimination. The play conveyed the idea that one must eliminate division on caste lines and live together.

Dance performances, on both classical and pop numbers, were appreciated by the audience.

This was followed by the prize distribution ceremony in which top three position holders of each class were honoured.

The participants of the cultural show were also honoured. Trophies were presented to the Head Boy and Head Girl by the chief guest.

Ms Manju Vij was declared best teacher of the year, while Ms Batra was honoured for her distinguished services.

Farewell function

Class IX students of Jain Public Senior Secondary School, Benjamin Road, organised a farewell function for Class X students here yesterday.
A cultural programme was organised comprising modern, traditional and Punjabi dances, songs and poems.

Ankita was selected Ms Personality and Jasminder was chosen Mr Personality. Prince and Deepali were declared Mr and Ms Scholar, respectively. Ritesh and Sunidhi were chosen Mr and Ms Best Smile. Varun and Aarti were declared Mr and Ms Best Dressed. Bhavpreet and Sneha were conferred the title of Mr and Ms Mischievous. The function ended with a speech by Mr S.K. Kalra, principal of the school.

Counselling can help fight social evils

The Department of Sociology, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture on social evils here this afternoon.
Dr B.K. Aggarwal, Professor and Head, Department of Human Development of Sociology, PAU, was the resource person. He was welcomed by the Principal, Dr Virinder Thind. Dr B.K. Aggarwal talked about the evils of foeticide and drug addiction. He said the solution laid in proper counselling of students by parents and teachers.
