Tangra (Amritsar),  February 20

About 2,000 angry villagers blocked the Amritsar-Jalandhar highway for four-hours-and-a-half as the police refused to lodge an FIR. The protesters relented after village Sarpanch, Parminder Singh Laddi, was accompanied by police to register the FIR.

Sandeep, a truck driver had gone to the school to help his friends cheat in the class VIII examination.

According to sarpanch Parminder Singh Laddi and Yudhvir Singh, secretary, Bhagat Singh Naujawan Sabha, Kulwant Kaur, the Vice-Principal of the school complained about the boys to the Principal.

The Principal first threatened and abused Sandeep and his friends Sukhnaib Singh and Kulwaran Singh, who had accompanied him, and then took out his revolver and shot twice in the air. He then shot Sandeep in the chest. His friends immediately rushed him to a chemist from there he was rushed to a Amritsar hospital.

He was declared brought dead by doctors.

The villagers took the body and sat on a dharna outside the police post to lodge an FIR. They also shouted slogans against the local MLA.

Mr Manjinder Singh Kang, former chairman, Forest Corporation, who visited the spot alleged that political bigwigs were protecting the accused principal. The body has been sent for a postmortem.
