7 Pak militants killed in Poonch

Jammu, February 20
Two self-styled commanders of the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba were among seven Pakistani militants killed in a fierce gunbattle with Army troops in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said.

On specific information about the presence of foreign militants in Anderwali Dhok in the Mandi forest belt, the Army cordoned off the area and launched a surgical operation to track the LeT militants holed in a hideout there.

An encounter followed when the Armymen challenged the militants to surrender, the sources said adding that a fierce gunbattle took place between the forces and the militants, in which seven Pakistani militants were killed and two more were still holding on.

The slain militants included two self-styled battalion and area commanders of the outfit identified as Abu Khaki and Usmani, the sources said.

From the scene of the encounter 7 AK rifles, 18 magazines, 3 pistols, 2 wireless sets, 8 blankets, 21 grenades, 7 UBGL grenades, one rocket launcher, 5 IEDs, explosive material and a large quantity of edible items and dry ration, were seized, they said.

Srinagar: The militants killed two people, including a school teacher, in separate incidents, police sources said.

They said two militants wearing masks barged into the house of Samandar Khan at Terina village in the Handwara area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir around 10 a.m. and fired at Khursheed Ahmad Naikoo.

Naikoo, a teacher hailing from Darbal village, died on the spot and one of his students Shabir Ahmad Lone of Terina village was seriously injured in the shooting, which took place when he was teaching a group of local boys, the sources said. Lone was shifted to hospital for treatment, they added.

The sources said the motive behind his killing was not known immediately.

In another incident, militants abducted and later tortured to death a civilian identified as Ghulam Mohammad Dangroo at Gurmukh village in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir.

Dangroo, a resident of Lesso-brain, was abducted by suspected militants from morning on the suspicion of being an informer, the sources said.

Geelani condemns Aziz’s rearrest

Srinagar, February 20
The chairman of the breakaway faction of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today condemned the rearrest of senior separatist leader and supremo of People’s League Sheikh Abdul Aziz, describing the move as “unlawful”.

Mr Aziz was released from the Kot Balwal jail, Jammu, yesterday after three years of detention, but was again whisked away to an unknown destination by the police.

“We condemn the unlawful detention of Aziz,” Mr Geelani said adding that the rearrest of the senior leader exposed the state government claims that all detainees would be set free.

Meanwhile, several leaders of Mr Geelani’s faction addressed various Friday congregations across the Kashmir valley, ruling out elections as a solution to the vexed Kashmir issue.

“Elections under the auspices of the Election Commission of India cannot be a substitute to the demand of a plebiscite,” they said. — UNI
