ON January 31, popular singer-actress Suraiya passed away after a brief illness. Born in 1929 as Suraiya Jamal Shaikh at Lahore in Pakistan, she began her career by doing children’s programmes for All India Radio along with Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor used to call her Kallu in jest due to her dark complexion. She was never trained in classical music, but gradually became the most popular singer-actress. Suraiya got filmi exposure in 1941 when she accompanied uncle Zahoor (popular villain at that time) to the sets of movie, Taj Mahal. She got a chance to perform as the young Mumtaz Mahal. She was merely 12 then.Naushad chose her to sing when she was 13 year old. Suraiya had to stand on a stool to reach the mike to sing, Panchi ja, picturised on Mehtaab a popular heroine. She got her first chance as a singing star in Bombay Talkies, Humaari Baat, in 1943. She got another chance next year when she performed for the film, Phool, in 1944. In 1946, another blockbuster, Anmol Ghadi, made Suraiya favourite of all. It brought her immense popularity. Socha tha kya, kya ho gaya was sung for the film which became popular.She gave many more hit movies like Pyar ki Jeet (1948), Badi Bahen (1949), Dillagi, Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shayar (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare, Waaris (1954) and Mirza Ghalib (1954). Aah ko chaihiye ek umar, Dil-e-Nadaan tujhe hua kya hai, Yeh na thi humari kismet are a popular songs sung by her for the film, Mirza Ghalib, which won the President`s gold medal. Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru paid her the ultimate compliment by telling her she had brought Mirza Ghalib to life.
