Writers rejoice! Here’s something for you
Raman Mohan

THOSE who find professional word processing programs too cumbersome now have another choice. This fortnight we feature a freeware that is light on the HDD and easy to use. It saves files in the RTF format, which means you can open files prepared in this program in any other word processor like MS Word too. It is feature-rich yet none of these requires special skills to handle. This is a must for home PC users.

RoughDraft

This is a freeware word processor. Although suitable for everybody, it has features specifically designed for writers of novels, short stories, articles, plays and screenplays. It is designed to be as practical as possible, offering all features you need, without being complicated or awkward to use. It supports comprehensive text and paragraph formatting options. It can import files in Word 6.0, Word ’97 and HTML formats. The Side Panel makes common operations quicker and convenient. You can open up to 100 files at the same time. It features spell check (in British or American English) of the whole text or of individual words. You can also create a custom dictionary to which you can add your own words. However, the dictionary and thesaurus facility (provided by Anthony Lewis’ WordWeb program) has to be installed separately. Though it is not required to run RoughDraft yet the program writer strongly recommends it. Like Word this freeware allows automatic insertion of user-defined words - for character names or commonly used words. It has four extra clipboards for inserting longer phrases or paragraphs. The program has special modes for screenplay writers and playwrights that make formatting easy. It saves files in the popular Rich Text Format (RTF), meaning they can be opened in just about any other word processor. Or if you want it can create HTML files of your work for publishing on the Web. RoughDraft can automatically generate cover pages for manuscript submissions with word and page counts. It features font styles for quicker formatting and shortcut keys for just about everything. RoughDraft is not designed to compete with major commercial word processors. If you need features such as tables, graphics, indexes, cross-references or footnotes, you’ll have to look elsewhere. If you want a no-nonsense writing tool, then this might be just what you need.
