Parveen, Sandeep, Rajwinder shine

Ludhiana, January 28
Parveen, a student of BA III, Rajwinder Kaur, of BA II and Sandeep of MA part I clinched two titles each on the opening day of the 43rd annual athletic meet of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, today. Parveen won the sack-race and shot put while Sandeep emerged winner in 50-metre and 400 metre races. Rajwinder Kaur emerged victorious in long jump and 800 metre race.

Earlier, Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, the District Sports Officer, inaugurated the two-day meet in which around 2000 girls are taking part. The chief guest set some pigeons free as a symbol of peace and harmony. Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, the Principal of the college, welcomed the chief guest.

Results: 50 m race-Sandep 1, Harjaspreet Kaur 2, Jaspreet Kaur 3; 100 m race-Simarjeet Kaur 1, Sandeep 2, Rupinderjeet 3; 200 m race-Sandeep 1, Simarjeet 2, Sapandeep 3.

Sports Club win cricket tourney

Ludhiana, January 28
Fine all-round display by Vicky (28 runs and 3 for 32) helped Sports Club to rout BBF XI by five wickets and win trophy in the 8th Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Cricket Tournament organised by the Young Shastri Club at the Daresi Ground here yesterday. Vickey was also declared the player of the tournament.

Batting first, BBF XI made 139 runs in 30 overs. Sports Club achieved the target in 23 overs losing five wickets.

Mr Jagmohan Sharma, president of the Congress Committee (urban), gave away prizes to the winners. Sports Club received a cash prize of Rs 5,100 and trophy while the BBF XI got a cash prize of Rs 3,100 and the runners-up trophy.

Brief scores: BBF XI- 139 all out (Chintan Sehgal 23, Mohit 21, Sachin 18; Vicky 3 for 32, Harbhajan Kala 3 for 22 and Baldev 2 for 17)

Sports Club 140 for 5 (Vicky 28, Nishu 23 and Bhuvnesh 22; Lalit 3 for 28).

Sarabha Club beat PAU centre

Ludhiana, January 28
The Punjab Sports Department, in association with the District Olympic Association, Ludhiana, has organised an exhibition football match and relay races at the local Guru Nanak Stadium. In a keenly-contested match, Sarabha Club outplayed PAU Coaching Centre 2-1.

In the 4x400 m relay race (boys), the District Coaching Centre ‘A’, comprising Avtar Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Navneet Singh, emerged victorious. Punjab Speed Fund Academy, Ludhiana, with runners namely Santosh Singh, Satinder Singh, Jagdev Singh and Parneet Singh in their ranks finished runner-up. The third spot was bagged by District Coaching Centre ‘B’ that included Prem John, Gurpreet Singh, Amandeep Singh and Tinku.

In the girls’ section, District Coaching Centre ‘A’ team of Rupinder Kaur, Kaushalya Devi, Manjit Kaur and Baljit Kaur finished ahead of others to bag the title. Team of Gagandeep Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Kulbir Kaur and Jasmeen Kaur, representing District Coaching Centre ‘B’, secured the second position, while the third spot was earned by the Sub Coaching Centre, Khanna, with runners namely Akwinder Kaur, Kusum, Sheetal and Amandeep Kaur.
