Geelani lays down conditions for talks Jammu, January 22 The leader of the hawks in the separatist camp, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has stated that he was not opposed to talks with Delhi provided the government withdrew all troops from the border and the Kashmir valley. His another condition is that besides accepting that Kashmir was a dispute and not an internal problem, the Centre should order the release of all militants and political leaders who have been in detention for last several years. Mr Geelani has opposed the opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road till the Kashmir issue was resolved. The APHC (Geelani) Chairman has stated that by reopening the road without settling the Kashmir issue would give a wrong signal. He has made it clear that he had never opposed the dialogue but he had his reservations because the ongoing talks between Delhi and the APHC (Abbas) leaders were aimed at the devolution of political and financial powers on the assumption that Kashmir was an integral part of India. According to Mr Geelani, this mindset had to be changed in case Delhi wanted to involve “our groups” and those whose ideology was not different from “ours”. However, APHC (Abbas) leaders did not subscribe to the view of the Mr Geelani saying that talks, whether at bilateral or trilateral level, should not be tagged with preconditions. |
Army men recall paratrooper’s bravery Jammu, January 22 In the third week of April last year, his team was tasked for the operation. After an arduous March to the target area, militants hiding in a large bunker spotted the movement of the troops in the absence of any jungle cover. As soon as the team led by Sanjog neared the hideout, it came under heavy fire. For half an hour the men in olive were pinned down. A colleague of the Ashok Chakra winner said, “Sanjog sensed the danger to his men.He crawled to the hideout and hurled a grenade in which one militant was killed.” He said the rebels targeted Sanjog, who received a bullet wound on his shoulder. Still he moved on and started charging the rebels with his gunfire, in which two more militants were killed. As he lay fully wounded, he sneaked into the mouth of the hideout and drew his commando knife with which he killed one militant in a hand-to-hand combat. On seeing this, his men swooped on the hideout, killing all 13 militants and arrested one of them. Sanjog had gone for four operations as a commando before he sacrificed his life. According to his batchmates, Sanjog had a passion for doing something extraordinary, which motivated him to volunteer for the 9th battalion Parachute Regiment, where he completed a six-month training course with flying colours. He evinced keen interest in handling sophisticated weapons.
