School for handicrafts near Surajkund soon

Faridabad: The town which is famous for holding the internationally known Art and Craft Fair at Surajkund in February each year, will add another feather to its cap. A school for providing training in handicrafts and rural crafts will soon come up at Greenfields Colony located in the neighbourhood of Surajkund.

The Union Minister of State for Rural Industry, Mr Sanghpriya Gautam, inaugurated the institution known as ‘Hastkala Gurukul’ at a function held here on Thursday evening. Sponsored by the Khadi Commission, the Gurukul will impart training to the youths who have interest in the field and who want to hone their talent in handicrafts and other local arts. Dr Ajit Kumar of the IGNOU has prepared the syllabus of the course to be run here.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gautam stressed the need to promote the rural artisans and industry.

He said there was a need to launch a proper drive to save the arts and crafts that reached the brink of extinction. Without the support of proper marketing, the survival would be difficult. He said the rural products should get enough exposure and the authorities concerned have to ensure the display of such products through exhibitions. TNS
