Rabya Gill and Jaanesh Kaur made it to the last four in the girls’ under-12 section of the sub-junior and junior tennis meet at the Lake Club tennis courts here on the penultimate day today. The finals would be played tomorrow.

DAV-8 win

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated DAV School, Amritsar, by seven wickets in the PCA Parle Super League Knockout Cricket Tournament at MCA grounds and YPS, Mohali, today. DAV-Amritsar batted first and scored 136 runs. Saransh scored 51 runs and Abhishek scored 18 runs. Sandeep took three wickets and Ashwani took two for 42. In reply, DAV-8 scored 140 for three in 37 overs. Sidharth Sharma remained unbeaten on 64 and Harjeet scored 25 runs. Vipan Kumar took two for 28.

The match between Greenfield School, Mohali, and ARKS Senior Secondary School, Patiala, ended in a tie. Greenfield School scored 211 for nine in 40 overs. Arjit was the top scorer with 69 runs. In reply, ARKS school scored 211 in 40 overs. The highest score was by Anil (45).

Cycling meet

The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association will hold Chandigarh Track Cycling Championship for boys and girls at Panjab University grounds on January 25 from 8 am. Those interested in taking part may send their entries to Mr Rakesh Mohindra at C-80, Sector 14.

Sports day

The annual sports day of Shivalik Public School, Phase VI, Mohali, was held today. Students took part in a march past and a fancy drill was presented. Athletics events like 100 metres race, slow cycling and inter-House relay race were organised. The winners of all events were awarded medals.

MP, Goa in quarters

Last year’s runners-up Chandigarh were comfortably placed after registering their third consecutive victory in the boys’ section of the 15th Junior National Baseball Championship at the Panjab University grounds here today. Despite suffering a defeat at the hands of Himachal Pradesh, holders Goa, along with Madhya Pradesh, moved into the quarter-finals from group A.

Both teams had two wins and one defeat each. By virtue of their better scoring quotient, Madhya Pradesh topped the group. In the four-team round robin league, Madhya Pradesh scored 19 runs and conceded 11 while Goa finished with 12 runs for and 14 against. Chandigarh suffered their first defeat at the hands of Madhya Pradesh 2-6 in a group B match in the girls’ section.

Football trials: The Chandigarh Football Association will conduct field trials for the 12th Senior Women’s National Football Championship in February. Selection trials will be held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Chandigarh on January 18.

Infosys win: Infosys defeated SMPL by two wickets in the CRY Cadence Cricket Challenge. Puneet Soti was declared the man-of-the-match. Brief scores: SMPL: 140 runs in 25 overs (Amrit 27, Sanjay 27, Sandeep 25 not out, Puneet Soti 5 for 24); Infosys: 144 runs in 24 overs (Sandy 22, Mohit 19, Amit 3 for 25).

897 registered at verification camps

In the wake of the recent spate of incidents of burglary in the city, the police today organised servants' verification camps at 11 different points here and 897 persons employed as servants or help in residential and commercial establishments were registered with the police for verification.

The camps, the police said, were organised for the convenience of the city residents who wanted to get the antecedents of their helps verified. Sources said residents hesitated normally to visit police stations or police beat boxes for verification of their servants.

The police has urged the residents to get their servants antecedents verified as it helped in prevention and detection of crime. More such camps would be organised in future also, said the police.

Maj-Gen Kher takes charge

Chandigarh, January 17
Maj-Gen A.K. Kher has taken over as the 43rd Colonel of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME). He is currently serving as Major General EME at Headquarters Western Command, Chandi Mandir.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he was commissioned in December 1966. After completing his M.Tech in automobile engineering and masters in business administration, he underwent the Long Defence Management Course from the College of Defence Management at Secunderabad.

Important assignments held by him include Commandant of the EME Centre at Secunderabad and Commander, Headquarters EME Technical Group, New Delhi.

Enforcement wing SI suspended

Chandigarh, January 17
The Chandigarh Administration today suspended a Sub-Inspector of the Enforcement Wing for allegedly demanding money to keep the names of a group of persons on the list of beneficiaries of subsidised housing. Acting on a complaint of residents of Colony Number IV located in Industrial Area Phase I, the Administration got an enquiry conducted. It was found that the complainants, who were all slum dwellers, were eligible for rehabilitation. However, Sub-Inspector Kasturi Lal wanted to keep them out of the list. The Deputy Commissioner confirmed that Mr Lal had been suspended.
