Translate and search with PractiSearch
Raman Mohan

Searching the Web for a particular text is a tedious job. It can be time consuming and frustrating too. Over the years many search tools have appeared making searching easier. This fortnight we feature one of the latest search tools that is, in fact, much more than an ordinary search tool and makes Web searching an interesting experience. On top of all, the program is free.

PractiSearch

The main task of this handy tool is to start a Web search of a selected text with a hotkey or a mouse click, thus providing with the quickest way of searching. If you do not want to spend lots of time copying the text, opening Internet Explorer (or other browser) and pasting the text in the Google Toolbar, or even opening a search engine Website and then pasting the text in the search box, followed by PractiSearch is what is needed. It is easy to use. Select a text you want to search, press a hotkey, for example, Ctrl+C+C (you can assign different hotkeys) and a Google Web page will open with the search results. PractiSearch is more than just a quick Web search. Imagine that you get an e-mail in a foreign language and want to translate it quickly to grasp the meaning, just select the foreign text, press another hotkey or middle-click with the mouse and an online translator Web page (e.g. Babelfish) will open with the translation. PractiSearch is more than just a Web search and translation assistant - its resources (a variety of search engines and online translators and dictionaries) include news sites, online shops (e.g. Amazon and Ebay), software archives and entertainment portals. Besides, you can easily add other Websites of your choice if they are not there yet. It has a SearchBar, which is a special window where you can write the text. To search or edit the text you have sent it to the SearchBar from other applications. Then there is a SearchBasket, which is a small window that always stays on the top and serves to capture the text you drag-and-drop in it. If you drag and drop a word on to the left ‘List’ section, a search menu will open with resources for you to choose from. If you drag-and-drop a word on to the right section, the program will launch the default resource with the search results for that word. You can move the SearchBasket by dragging it to any place on screen. You can also double-click and right-click the SearchBasket. The first will open the search menu or launch the default resource, depending on what section you click, the second will open the program menu just like when you right-click the program icon in the system tray.
