Dreaming of nests
Vinaya K. Manhas

THE dreams of nests carry the same interpretation as dreams of homes. The nest could be empty or it could have eggs. It might be broken or a bird might be sitting in it. The interpretation of the nest symbol depends on the context in which it is seen.

As per Indian thought, to see a bird sitting in its nest is a lucky omen. It means that you shall be the benefactor of a will left by someone. But should you see chicks in the nest then it is a bad omen. You shall stand to lose a property dispute. But if there is a pair of birds, too, in the nest along with the chicks then the interpretation of the dream changes and it is foretells happy times for your family. Should you see dead chicks or broken eggs in the nest then you are cautioned to be prepared for severe losses and other problems.

As per western thought, seeing nests in your dreams denotes prosperity. Should an unmarried young woman see this dream then it is indicative of marriage in the near future. Seeing an empty nest means that your near and dear ones shall desert you in times of need. If there are eggs in the nest then you are assured of success in any venture you undertake. Chicks in the nest indicate successful journeys and satisfactory dealings with others.

Psychoanalytically speaking, nests, like homes, indicate security and safety. Such a dream indicates that emotionally we are very secure and have no desire to leave our homes. It represents the feelings of warmth and security that your present environment gives you. If it is broken, it could indicate a lurking fear in our minds that all this may be taken away from us. It might also indicate that we foresee some danger to our safety or to our families.

An unmarried 39-year-old woman would often dream of following a crow to its nest. When she reached there, she would see its young ones come cawing next to it expecting some food. Then the crow would look at her with tears in its eyes and turn its head towards its nest. Then she would see that the nest is broken. Even she would start crying on seeing its plight. The dream is quite symbolic of her predicament. She has no hope of having a home and family in the future. Thus, although the crow has its young ones it does not have a home. The woman’s feelings of helplessness are depicted in the dream.
