Arthroscopic surgery starts at trauma centre

Ludhiana, January 5
The facility of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery is now being provided at the Institute of Orthopedics and Superspeciality Trauma Centre, Gurdev Hospital, Ferozepore Road, for the first time. Dr Anil Lokhande, MS (Orth.), M.Ch. (Orth.), FRCS (Orth) was in the city yesterday to inaugurate this facility.

After his initial training in orthopedic surgery, Dr Lokhande took training in the UK, the USA and Australia and worked there for about four years. He is now a visiting consultant in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery to the IOSTC. He will be visiting Ludhiana on the first Saturday of every month to provide these services to the patients of this region and will be available at the IOSTC, Ludhiana.

Last year with an objective to provide state of the art facilities in the fields of joint replacement surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, spine surgery, trauma surgery, plastic surgery and neuro surgery, IOSTC, was established in Gurdev Hospital.

775 examined at medical camp

Ludhiana, January 5
The Lal Bahadur Shastri Social Forum organised a free medical camp at Anand Marg School, New Kundanpuri, Civil Line, Ludhiana here today under the chairmanship of Mr Sushil Malhotra.

More than 775 patients, including schoolchildren, were examined and free medicines were distributed. Dr R.K. Sharma, Dr Sanjay Bhalla, Dr Ajay Shahi examined the patients.

The chief guest, Mr Ashwani Saggi, appreciated the social welfare activities of the forum.

Ludhiana win softball title

Ludhiana, January 5
Ludhiana prevailed over Jalandhar 3-1 to clinch the title in the Punjab State Senior Softball Championship that concluded on the Ramgarhia College ground here yesterday. Bhupinder, Ramesh and Harpreet contributed one point each for the winners, while Gurjeet was the lone scorer for Jalandhar.

Earlier, in the semi-final, Ludhiana overcame the stiff resistence from Gurdaspur 5-3 with Sunil, Bhupinder, Dharampal, Ravi and Nirmal securing one point each. For Gurdaspur, Manjinder scored a brace and Gauarv scored once. In the second semi-final, Jalandhar defeated Patiala 4-1. Gurjeet (2), Vijay and Shiv one each were the architects for Jalandhar’s victory, while Nithan (1) reduced the margin for Patiala.

Lodhi kabaddi cup on Jan 30

Ludhiana, January 5
The seventh edition of the International Lodhi Kabaddi Cup Tournament, which set the trend in the state of holding kabaddi tournaments with the help of Indians settled abroad, will be organised at Guru Nanak Stadium here on January 30. The man behind this kabaddi extravaganza, Charanjit Singh Channa Alamgir, who resides in the USA, has reached here to supervise the arrangements for the event.

An industrialist of Toronto (Canada), Mr Beant Singh Dhaliwal, president, Lodhi Cup, while talking to The Tribune over the telephone, said that eight top kabaddi outfits of the country would be vying for top honours in this tournament. The winners would be given a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 and the Lodhi Gold Cup, while the runners-up team would get a prize of Rs 60,000. These prizes have been sponsored by Mr Alamgir and Mr Mohan Singh Jodhan (USA), respectively, Mr Dhaliwal informed.

Besides, the two losing semi-finalists would also be awarded suitably. These prizes would be given by Mr Satwant Singh Boparai and Mr Santokh Singh Aulakh of Toronto. The best raider and the best stopper of the tournament would be given a gold medal each by Mr Amar Singh Deol.

Mr Chana said that this tournament would be played according to the international rules. Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, president, Youth Akali Dal, will inaugurate the tournament while Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union minister, and Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal will be the chief guests at the closing ceremony.

The organisers would meet here on January 15 to review the preparations being made to conduct this tournament, Mr Chana said.
