SAARC summit: people wish it succeeds Jammu, January 5 “I have been watching television for the past three days hoping that at least India and Pakistan agree to enforce the ceasefire on the LoC permanently,” Kanwal said. These Pakistani women, now citizens of Jammu and Kashmir, yearn for soft borders so that “we are able to interact frequently and easily with our parents
across the LoC.” This is the sole aspiration of these women. One woman said “we had to secure intervention from the Chief Minister, Mufti Sayeed, for arranging tickets in the Delhi-Lahore bus as only four buses in a week leave for Pakistan when the waiting list is quite long.” Zeba, a student wanted that students from the two countries be allowed to meet one another and it will remove mistrust and hatred between the two sides. She has suggested “that schools be permitted to conduct inter-country trips.” Another woman, married to a Jammu youth in 1985, said “my parents have never been able to visit me because of the tedious visa and permit problems.” While these women pray for friendly relations between India and Pakistan, to facilitate easy travel, several thousand border migrants living in tents in Devipur village in Akhnoor sector wanted “the two sides to ensure trouble-free borders.” Des Raj and Roshan Lal,
dwelling in the camp, said “we have suffered tribulations since 1999 when heavy Pakistani firing and mortar shelling forced us to quit our ancestral villages.” They said “since then we have been living as refugees, we have abandoned farming and our children suffered on account of lack of basic facilities for education in the camps.” The two said recent ceasefire on the LoC had encouraged some of our migrant people to return to their villages and resume farming practices. Others are still apprehensive of the attitude of Islamabad. However, the
people’s mood in the Kashmir valley, which was upbeat three days ago, had turned into dismay after they learnt that during the SAARC deliberations both India and Pakistan avoided touching Kashmir issue. They still want the two sides to sit together and hammer out a solution to the problem. Nissar Ahmed, an intellectual, said “though we believe that without the settlement of the Kashmir issue peace may be a distant dream in the subcontinent, we, atleast, aspire for soft borders and improvement in trade and travel between the two sides.” Others wanted end to bloodshed even if the dialogue on Kashmir was to be opened after sometime. Hardliners among the separatists, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani have had no hopes on the SAARC deliberations saying that the Kashmir issue cannot be settled at the SAARC summit. These separatists want trilateral parleys where the three parties connected to the dispute, India, Pakistan and people of Kashmir, put their heads together and work out a solution. While majority of people in the Kashmir valley favour reopening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, those in the border areas in Jammu wish for peace on the LoC so that they no longer suffered death and destruction in their villages. |
