2 terrorists, 4 jawans die in attack on Jammu railway station

Jammu, January 2
Four security personnel, including Lieutenant Triveni Singh, were killed as terrorists wearing Army uniform attacked the crowded railway station here this evening.

The security forces killed two terrorists and search was going on for the third one.

Fourteen persons, including a child, were seriously injured.

Lt. Triveni Singh, who was leading a quick reaction team of the Army to track down the terrorists, was killed in an encounter.

Two BSF personnel, Head Constable Goverdhan Ram and Constable Dinesh Chander (129 Bn), who were proceeding on annual leave, were killed when the terrorists threw a grenade at them.

The DGP, Mr Gopal Sharma, said a total number of four security personnel were killed.

Constable Raj Kumar of the Railway Police was killed as he challenged the terrorists.

The terrorists hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately at platforms one and two, where passengers were boarding the Shalimar Express.

They targeted the BSF personnel who were proceeding on annual leave.

Army, CRPF and personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the state police cordoned the railway station and were engaged in an encounter with the terrorists, who first took positions on a pedestrian bridge linking the platforms and thereafter took shelter behind platform number 3. It is suspected that the third had escaped towards the godowns of the railway.

There was panic as about 500 passengers were caught in the cross firing. However, they were rescued by the Army and the platforms were got vacated before the armoured vehicles of the Army were brought on the platforms.

Maj-Gen Rajinder Singh, GOC of the 26th Div, said Lt Triveni Singh of the 5th JAK Light Infantry, who was injured in a grenade attack by terrorists, killed one of the ultras before laying his life.
