Punjabi music suffered irreparable loss on November 17 with the death of Surjit Bindrakhia. He was 41. A folk singer, who held a special position in the world of Punjabi music, Bindrakhiya in his decade long career, released 32 albums. Almost all albums were hit but amongst the bestsellers were Dupatta tera sat rang da, Lak tannu tannu and Jat di pasand. A few movies whose songs were sung by him are Kachehari, Varri, Badla Jatti Da and Jat Jeonna Morr.

Surjit Bindrakhia was born at Bindrakh village in Ropar on April 15, 1962. Initially, he was trained to be a wrestler, like his father Sucha Singh, but he was more inclined towards music. He entered into the music world as a bhangra player and soon became famous as a folk singer.

Initially, Bindrakhia was more famous in rural areas but his talent broke all boundaries when he sang Dupatta tera sat rang da. The song brought him immense publicity and the song reached BBC Top 10 songs in 1994. His second big success was Toon nahin boldi.

He was the only singer in Punjab who found a place in the Limca Book of World Records with his brilliant haike of 28 seconds.
