Fine-tune software and hardware "Tweaking" an operating system refers to modifying software, hardware, or other settings that affect the operating system’s working. These are registry-level settings that can be modified without the pain of searching through a Windows registry. Some tweaks may determine what is shown on the desktop. Other tweaks may determine how network protocols work or what programs are available in the Start Menu. Whatever the tweak, having control over them means you have more control over your operating system and how the computer works. This fortnight we feature a program that helps you apply tweaks. WinGuides Tweak Manager This software uses a
Windows XP interface to provide access to hundreds of tweaks for the
Microsoft Windows operating systems. These tweaks can be applied to such
areas as: Windows core operating system features, hardware, network,
security and software. WinGuides tweak manager requires the following
minimum system configurations: Microsoft Windows ’95, Windows ’98,
Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP,
5 MB of free hard disk space (an additional 10 MB is needed during
installation only to accommodate the initial setup files), 16 MB of RAM
available, Intel 486 Pentium or better processor, Microsoft Internet
Explorer version 4.01 or later and an Internet connection (for Live
Updates). There are a number of ways to view available tweaks in
WinGuides Tweak Manager. These include, the Tweak Tree, the Tweak Window
and Tweak Search. Applying a tweak is accomplished in the Tweak Window.
To apply a tweak, select its name in the Tweak Tree, the Tweak Window,
or the Search Tweaks Window. This will open tweak into the Tweak Window.
Because Tweaks have different properties,
there is no single, generic way to describe applying tweaks. But, each
tweak will feature one or more of the same types of elements. WinGuides
tweak manager provides the opportunity to set a number of environmental
preferences to best optimise and personalise tweak manager experience.
These preferences include Live Update, Logging, Connection information,
Password Protection and Startup. To set the parameters for your
WinGuides tweak manager, select Preferences from Edit menu. This will
open the Tweak manager options Window where you can set the parameters.
