Deputy Director Chauhan takes charge

Mr Zorawar Singh Chauhan joined as Deputy Director, (Sports) Punjab, here today. Mr Chauhan (58), before joining here was posted at Patiala in the same capacity. It is after a gap of more than four years that a Deputy Director has joined in city. Ms Surinder Dhir had retired as Deputy Director from Ludhiana in October, 1999. He was accorded a warm welcome by Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, along with other coaches of the department when he came to attend the office.

Mr Zorawar Singh joined the Sports Department at Bathinda as sports officer (wrestling) in 1973 and the next year he was transferred to Hoshiarpur where he served for a number of years. He was promoted to the post of Deputy Director in June this year.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, he said he, with the support of his team of officers in Ludhiana would try to identify the grey areas which require immediate attention. He cited the example of astroturf laid at the local PAU ground which needed water sprinkling system and appropriate apparatus for cleaning up the synthetic surface.

The infrastructure created here for the National Games 2000 was also to be upgraded, he added.

When asked about his own achievements during his heydays, Mr Chauhan said in 1970, he won the All-India Inter-University Wrestling championship and the same year he won the Punjab Kumar title at Anandpur Sahib. In 1973, Mr Chauhan participated in the World Veterans Wrestling meet in Canada where he won a bronze medal.

The prominent trainees of Mr Chauhan include international wrestlers Jagdeep Singh and Malkiat Singh.

Inter-varsity hockey meet from December 2

Ludhiana, November 3
The second edition of the All-India Guru Gobind Singh Inter-University Namdhari Seed Hockey Gold Cup Tournament will be organised by the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association at the astroturf ground of Punjab Agricultural University from December 2 to 6.

This was disclosed by Mr Amrik Singh Minhas, president of the organising association, after a meeting held here today. Eight universities, including Nangalore University, Aligarh University, Kurukshetra University, Meerut University, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Punjabi University, Patiala, Delhi University and Jamia Milia University, have confirmed their participation in the tournament. The winners of this meet will receive a running Gold Cup trophy, sponsored by the family of late Punjab Chief Minister, Beant Singh.

The meeting was attended among others by Mr Baldev Singh, national hockey coach, Mr Gurwinder Singh of Kila Raipur, Mr Didar Singh, Mr Sukhwinder Singh, Mr Gurbhej Singh, Mr Jagrrop Singh Jarkhar, Mr Parveen Thakur, Narinder Singh Habhowal, Mr Baljit Singh of Doraha, Prof Kawaljeet Singh of GNE, Mr Ajaypal Singh, Mr Randeep Singh Sidhu, Mr Bhupinder Singh, Mr Iqbal Singh, Mr Balkar Singh, Mr Tara Singh and Mr B.S. Malhi.

Mr Tej Parkash Singh, Minister for Transport, Punjab, would inaugurate the tournament, Mr Minhas said.

Trials for rural games from November 5

Ludhiana, November 3
Trials to select teams for five disciplines, hockey (boys and girls), kho-kho (boys and girls), wrestling (boys), athletics (boys and girls) and kabaddi (boys and girls), will be conducted here at different venues on November 5 and 7.

According to Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, the selected boys and girls will represent the district in the Punjab State Rural Games, scheduled to be held at Sangrur from November 14 to 16.

The boys and girls should be below 16 years as on December 31 and be from rural areas. They should bring with them proof of their age and residence.

The venues for the trials are PAU for hockey on November 5; Guru Nanak Stadium for kho-kho on November 5, athletics on November 7 and kabaddi on November 7; and multi-purpose hall of the Guru Nanak Sports Complex for wrestling on November 5.

GGN Khalsa College enter semifinals

Ludhiana, November 3
GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, demolished DM College, Moga, by eight wickets to secure a berth in the semifinal of the Panjab University ‘A’ Inter-College Cricket Tournament being played at the GTB National College, Dakha, near here, today.

Batting first, DM College scored 97 runs in 30 overs. Only two batsmen Sandeep Singh (19) and Sukhdeep Singh (14) could reach the double-figure mark. For GGN Khalsa College, Bobby Kailey was the main wicket-taker, grabbing four wickets for 13 runs followed by Jaspreet Singh and Vikramjeet Singh, who scalped two victims each.

GGN Khalsa College made the required runs in the 17th over after losing two wickets. Navdeep and Mandeep Singh contributed 35 and 21 runs, respectively. Harpal Singh of Moga college claimed one wicket for 25 runs.

Inter-school hockey tourney from Nov 9

Doraha, November 3
The fifth Inter-school Divali Hockey Tournament, dedicated to the memory of a former president of the management committee of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, late Ishwar Singh, will be organised from November 9 to 11.

According to Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Principal of the college, “It was the wish of late Iswar Singh to promote the game and inculcate a healthy competitive spirit among schoolchildren.” The organising secretary, Prof R.S. Pali, said the last date for sending the entries was November 6 till 1 pm and no entry fee would be charged. OC
