UAE effective for uterine fibroids, says expert
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 3
Instead of having to undergo the ordeal of getting their uterus removed because of the problem of fibroids, women now have the option of going in for a minimal invasive procedure, made possible due to the advances made in the field of interventional neuroradiology.

A study conducted by the Radiodiagnosis Department at the PGI to assess the safety and success of the procedure of injecting a gel form to block blood supply to the uterine fibroids proved to be successful in 90 per cent of the cases.

"In order to put an end to the suffering of women who undergo a lot of bleeding and pain during their periods, the method of uterine artery embolisation (UAE) has been very effective," disclosed Dr J.R. Bapuraj. He said though the issue of infertility due to the presence of uterine fibroids was a debated issue, but the UAE procedure seemed to have helped some of our women patients. Dr Bapuraj spoke about the UAE procedure at the Neuroradiology conference being organised at the PGI.

The UAE facility is available only at a handful of institutes in the country, though in the west it is the preferred choice of women. He said though a lot of expertise was required to perform this procedure but extending it to more referral institutes would make it lot easier for women, he said. In fact, the PGI was amongst the first medical centres in the country to start this procedure.

Dr Bapuraj, said there had been instances where the presence of fibroids had hampered the proper formation and growth of the foetus in the womb. He says the conventional method used to tackle uterine fibroids is to either remove the uterus (hysterectomy) or surgical removal of the fibroids called myomectomy. Doppler sonography performed before and after two and six months of UAE showed clinical improvement in the condition of the patients.

Talking about the cost factor of the UAE procedure, Dr Bapuraj said it was not much different from the conventional surgery, except that the PVA particles or gel form which is injected to block blood supply to the fibroids costs about Rs 3,000. He said gynaecologists were involved in the whole process and the patient was discharged within three days.

"Uterine fibroids become such a major health problem for women suffering from it that performing their routine task at workplace and home too becomes difficult," explained Dr Bapuraj, highlighting the suffering of women who had problem of uterine fibroids. On the concluding day of the sixth Conference of the Indian Society of Neuroradiology and Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology being held at the PGI, the role of supporting personnel like nursing staff, technologists and anaesthetists in the field of interventional radiology was discussed.
