Health Dept admits to 9 deaths Panipat, November 2 A front-page report in the NCR Tribune on Friday set the department thinking. A communication from the District Malaria Officer (DMO) to the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) has sought his “comments” regarding the news. Without contradicting the facts mentioned in the news report, the communication went on to claim that the Health Department was leaving no stone unturned to check the spread of the twin diseases. Endorsing the death figures due to suspected JE and dengue, the communication said: “In reality eight persons had died of suspected JE. In this district, only one dengue case has been confirmed, who has now fully recovered”. One death has been listed in the “suspected dengue case”, that of Azidur Rehman, the communication said. It claimed that the control room was established on October 7. On the issue of the Health Minister, Dr M. L. Ranga, pulling up the department for its shoddy handling of the situation, it said the Civil Surgeon, Dr L.N.Singh, had briefed the minister about the various measures taken to control the situation. However, sources said the minister was quite unhappy with the way the department had been handling the situation arising out of the outbreak of dengue and JE. However, the communication inadvertently throws some light on the laid-back functioning of the Health Department. It said that there had been 30 suspected cases of dengue (one confirmed) and 85 malaria cases reported till October 31. However, the exact cause of the deaths in the district had not been elaborated upon by the DMO. Meanwhile, defending the Health Department, the communication contested the news report that the department was “ill-equipped” to face the challenge posed by dengue and JE. We have enough number of PCM and Choloquin tablets, blood slides, all types of IV fluids, technical melathon and 8-amino tabs, it added. “Fogging is being done since October 1 and till date, 178 colonies in Panipat and Samalkha, besides 17 villages, have been covered. Two rounds of fogging had already been done, in which 26 JE-prone villages have been covered, it added. It may be recalled that several prominent citizens had been undergoing treatment at leading hospitals in the national Capital for suspected JE and dengue. Even then, the doctors at the local civil hospital had been mute spectators. The worst affected seem to be the Samalkha area. |
Dempo, Vasco start with a win New Delhi, November 2 Vasco, who finished third in last year’s national football league, seemed out of sorts and even ‘uninterested’ in the proceedings as they scrapped passed the qualifiers with a lone goal margin. The Goan outfit never looked like they had control on the game against an opponent, which also seemed satisfied with defending their castle than going on the attack. The lone goal of the tie came when Brazilian Carlos Roberto headed home a rebound in the 31st minute. The bankmen’s goalkeeper, Vikramjeet Singh, was the culprit as he failed to collect a long shot from Agnelo Colaco, which popped up in front of his goal mouth. Vasco had only three more tries at the opponent’s goal in the first half, including a 25-yard kick by Indian international K Ajayan, which struck the crossbar. The second half was a drab affair with no team even managing to make the opponent’s custodian work for a save. Earlier, Dempo recorded an easy victory over Indian Bank, thanks to a brace by R C Prakash in the 52nd and 56th minute. Dempo dominated the game for the entire 90 minutes and were leading 1-0 at the break through a goal by their Nigerian recruit Sunday Seah in the 21st minute. |

If he holds aloft the trophy on Sunday, Randhawa will have won the Hero Honda Masters on the last three occasions the tournament has been played at the Delhi Golf Club. He won back-to-back title in 1998 and 1999, before the tournament moved to DLF Golf and Country Club for the next two editions. The 31-year-old Gurgaon-based golfer has concentrated mostly on the Japanese PGA Tour this season, and is currently placed 36th in the order of merit. “Hero Honda Masters has a special place in my heart because it provided me my breakthrough victory on the Asian PGA Tour. I am not playing too many events on the Asian PGA Tour this season, but the Hero Honda Masters was being played at home and I could not let go the opportunity. I have an excellent record at the Delhi Golf Club and am excited about my chances,” said Randhawa, the only Indian to have featured in two majors-the 2000 and 2003 British Opens. In 1998, Randhawa was docked two penalty points during the third round for taking a wrong drop, but stormed back to shoot a 66 on the final day and win his maiden title by four strokes over Jeev Milkha Singh at 13-under 275. A four-day total of 11-under 277 was enough in 1999 to ensure him a one-stroke victory over South African Sammy Daniels. “What happened four years back, just happened and is now part of history. This is a new tournament and I will have to play well for four days. The fact that I have won the Suntory Open recently is giving me a lot of confidence going into the tournament. The fact that I have won at DGC last two times is something that I will have to live up tom,” added Randhawa, who is aiming to qualify for the US PGA Tour in 2004. The US $300,000 event was first staged of the Delhi Golf Club in 1997, where it continued till 1999. Indian professionals, who have won four times out of the five editions, have dominated the tournament. American Ted Purdy is the only exception, winning the inaugural championship ahead of Gaurav Ghei. Besides Randhawa, Arjun Atwal was triumphant in 2000 and Harmeet Kahlon is the defending champion, having won the 2002 title |

Huda drive to clear encroachments Sonepat, November 2 According to a report, the officials of the Huda, accompanied by the police, pressed into service the JCB machines and demolished two houses in Sector 12 and about 150 jhuggis in other sectors which were built without the approval of the Huda. This action rendered a number of poor families homeless and the members of these families, including women and children had to spent the night in the open. Many children were taken ill because of cold. The owners of the jhuggis and the houses alleged that the Huda officials had not issued any notice to them before the demolishing operations. They were not even allowed to take out the household articles from the jhuggis. As a result, many articles were damaged and they have suffered a huge financial loss on account of the demolishing operations. Meanwhile, the jhuggis owners called on the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Balwan Singh, and apprised him of the sufferings they had undergone. They also pointed out that the members of their families, including women and children had to spend the whole night in the open and cold. The DC gave a patient hearing to them and told them to take shelter at a vacant land for some days and then he would arrange for a permanent place for them. However, the officials did not give any assurance to them on this issue. |
