Singer who refused to
be his dad’s clone
AMIT Kumar was born on July 3, 1952 in a family of actors and singers. His father, the legendary Kishore Kumar, made a name for himself in filmdom and his paternal uncles (Ashok and Anup Kumar) were noted Bollywood actors. Amit’s career began with his dad’s production Door Ka Rahi in 1971 and his first Bengali song was recorded in 1972 under Kishore Kumar’s directions. Amit shot into fame with the song, Bade Acche Lagte Hain (film Balika Vadhu). R.D. Burman gave the music for the song. He didn’t remain under his father’s shadow for too long and gradually developed his own style of singing. Amit has sung for many Hindi films and notable ones are Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Dillagi, Sar Ankhon Par, Safari and Kohraam, Tezaab, Tridev, Qurbani, Ghayal, Hum, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Khel, Vishwatma, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Gurudev, Indrajeet, Judaai and many more. The latest one is Jhankar Beats whose songs, Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna, Ruk Ruk and Boss Kaun Hai? have been sung by Amit Kumar. He faced decline in his career after the death of his father in 1987. Some music directors offered him Kishore’s songs but Amit did not want to end up as his father’s clone.
