Counselling — effective treatment for
emotional disturbances
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 2
Counselling is fast emerging as an important treatment for the management of different grades of emotional disturbance and various counselling and psychotherapy techniques are successfully employed in helping people to come out of emotional crisis. It has become an effective treatment in a psychiatrist’s clinic. These views were expressed by Dr Rajiv Gupta, a consultant psychiatrist’s at a Tagore Nagar-based psychology and counselling centre, MANAS, in press note today.

Dr Gupta said as stress was increasing and competition building up, there was a corresponding rise in the number of people with symptoms of depressions, sleep loss, headache, bodyaches, physical fatigue, restlessness, tension, severe sadness, behavioural problems, outbursts of anger, dependence on alcohol and drugs, adjustment problems and disturbed inter-personal relations.

Dr Gupta said emotionally disturbed individuals often presented physical and psychological symptoms and kept visiting various medical and surgical specialists, harbouring fears that they were suffering from serious medical diseases. In fact, they were victims of one or the other form of depression or emotional disturbance, he said.

Regular counselling sessions helped these patients to boost self-confidence and come out of depression, he added.
