7 of marriage party killed in Doda

Wedding bells in the house of Niaz Ahmed at Pul Doda turned into wails and yells when six armed men stormed the house and killed seven persons last night.

According to the police, dispute over the girl, who was to get married, was the reason behind the carnage.

The police said that while four persons died on the spot, two succumbed to their bullet wounds in Doda hospital and the seventh breathed his last while being shifted to Government medical college in Jammu.

The police arrested four of the six killers. Official sources said that among killers two were SPOs and one surrendered militant.

Eyewitness accounts said that the man who was interested in marrying the girl from the family of Niaz Ahmed had hired the killers who barged into the house when women were busy applying henna to the bride. They sang wedding songs and men were making arrangements for the reception of the barat.

The attackers resorted to indiscriminate firing which killed seven men and wounded four.

Those killed were identified as Tariq Hussain, Riaz Ahmed, Mohd. Bashir, Sajjad Ahmed, Mohd. Amin, Aziz Ahmed and Al Paraz.

PTI adds: The accused who resorted to firing have been identified as Javed, Mushataq, Ishaq, Iqbal, Ashfaq and Mushtaq Ahmed, the spokesman said.

Judge among five injured in blast

Jammu, October 22
Brij Lal, Head Constable, was killed and five others, including a sub-judge and two advocates, were injured when a grenade exploded on the court premises in Kishtwar today.

The police said the five persons received minor injuries. According to a senior police officer in Doda, Head Constable, Brij Lal had gone to the court carrying a bag containing ammunition and explosives, which the security forces had recovered from a separatist. The police team had carried the accused also to the court in connection with a case filed against him.

When Brij Lal was showing the items to the judge a grenade exploded accidentally. The police said “the explosion was the result of some technical defect.”

As the sound of the explosion rent the court premises, a large group of litigant public fled believing that militants had attacked the court.

Additional police force was rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to hospital. The injured were discharged after treatment. A case has been registered and investigations have been launched.

SRINAGAR: The police and security forces have apprehended six infiltrators while crossing over to this side from PoK in north Kashmir.

A police spokesman said here that all of them were in the age group of 22 to 25 years and identified five of them as Mohammad Akram, Zaheer Ahmad, Merajuddin, Fayaz Ahmad Lone and Abdul Majeed Mir.

5 hurt in Pak shelling

Srinagar, October 22
A Border Security Force jawan and two women were among the five persons injured and several buildings, including a mosque, damaged in firing and shelling by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, official sources said today.

The shelling was intense in Uri sector of Baramula district where four civilians identified as Mohammad Sabir Shah, Noor Ahmad, Gulshan Begum and Hakim Bibi were injured in the Kamalkote area and hospitalised, the sources said, adding that several houses were also damaged.

Pakistani troops also shelled forward positions and villages from across the border in the Uri, Machil, Keran, Tangdhar, Teetwal and Gurez sectors of Baramula and Kupwara districts last night.

A Jammu report said BSF constable Anil Kumar was injured in firing by Pakistani Rangers on a border outpost in the district this morning.

In Poonch, Pakistani troops shelled mortars at Digwar Malti and Ajot villages for about an hour yesterday, causing damage to Fakir Din mosque at Digwar. — PTI

Governor blames Pak for proxy war

The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Lieut-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd), has blamed Pakistan for the proxy war in the state by extending support and manpower to militants.

Talking to a group of mediapersons at Raj Bhavan here last evening, the Governor said unprovoked firing and shelling from across the border was unabated over the past four months since he took over. He said there was no let-up in the infiltration of armed militants from across the border, and lauded the role of the Army defending the borders in checking it to a great extent.

The Governor said in the intensified anti-infiltration operations, heavy casualties were suffered by the infiltrators over the recent months. He disclosed that 78 infiltrators were killed along the LoC in September and 23 in the first three weeks of October.

Faced with a complex situation, the Governor said both the Central and state governments were doing their best. On the encounter at a village in Pulwama district of South Kashmir, the Governor said it was for the first time that militants had taken innocent civilians as hostage to secure their own escape.

Two Congress MLA’s Mohammad Shafi Bhat and Suman Bhagat have been appointed chairpersons of Agro Industries Development Corporation and Khadi and Village Industries Board respectively with the status of Cabinet minister, sources said.

Three People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA’s Sarafraz Khan, G N Lone and Ghulam Hassan Khan have been made chairpersons of Jammu and Kashmir Handloom Development Corporation, Sidco and Jammu and Kashmir Horticulture produce and market corporation respectively with minister of state status.

Mr Babu Singh, an independent MLA, has been appointed chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Minerals Limited.

Mr Shabir Ahmad Khan has been made vice-chairman of Advisory Board for Pahari speaking people, sources said.

Railway jobs in lieu of acquired land

Srinagar, October 22
The Centre has agreed to provide jobs in the Railways to one member of each of the family whose entire land holding has been acquired by the Railways for the prestigious rail project in Jammu and Kashmir.

This was conveyed by the Railway authorities to the Jammu and Kashmir Government, an official spokesman said here today.

Chief Secretary Sudhir S. Bloeria, who had a meeting with the Railway authorities, said the Centre had also agreed to consider jobs in the Railways also in cases where more than 60 per cent of the land owned stood acquired and the family concerned has no other source of livelihood.

Almost the entire requisite land for the project had been acquired and compensation provided to the owners, he said, adding the Centre would also consider acquiring the small and marginal land holdings of those farmers who were left with uneconomical and unproductive stretches. — PTI
