Seven lakh people visit health mela

New Delhi, October 20
The 10-day-long MTNL perfect health mela organised at Laxmi Nagar district centre concluded today. Nearly seven lakh people visited the mela which was organised for the first time in East Delhi. The mela president, Dr K.K. Aggarwal, pointed out on the occasion that the prevention and control of many diseases like malaria, heart attack, dengue, jaundice and diarrhoea required attention of the medical community, social workers and voluntary organisations. To eradicate the diseases and leading a healthy life it was suggested to take care at individual level through intensive health education programmes with the help of doctors and NGOs.

Former Governors Romesh Bhandari and Mr Satya Narayan Reddy were the chief guests at the function. Mr. Bhandari said that preventive health strategy had emerged as a wanted means of maintaining health and it should be made a part of the study. Mr Reddy stressed the role of exercise from all walks of life for preventing health disorders. There was a dire need to motivate the people about health awareness through regular dose of yoga and meditation, he said. Mr D. M. Mishra, executive director of MTNL, appreciated spreading health awareness among the people. He said the present mela represented the need for information, education and communication. All three were essential ingredients to maintain the total health. The next perfect health mela will be organised in South Delhi are from October 29 to November 7 next year.

Salwan Boys bag Parle Cup cricket title

New Delhi, October 20
An all-round display by Yogesh Nagar and deadly bowling by Sawan Saini helped Salwan Boys School defeat DAV Shalimarbagh by six wickets to bag the fourth Parle Cup Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground on Monday. Yogesh Nagar was adjudged the man of the match and Soumik Chatterjee the man of the series. Soumik got a cash award of Rs 10,000.

Salwan Boys pocketed a cash prize of Rs 16000 while Shalimarbagh collected Rs 9,000.

Asian Games wrestling champion Satpal gave away the prizes. Cricketers Gautam Ghambir, Amit Mishra and Gursharan Singh were also present.

Scores: DAV Shalimarbagh (1st innings): 193 all out in 45.3 overs (Soumik Chatterjee 84, Lov Sehrawat 32, Sawan Saini 4 for 34). Second innings: 147 for 9 in 30 overs (Lov Sehrawat 34, Sawan Saini 4 for 37, Yogesh Nagar 3 for 23).

Salwan Boys (1st innings): 244 all out in 49.5 overs (Yogesh Nagar 60, Rajeev Sharma 49, Arun Choudhary 34, Abhishek Sakuja 3 for 49). Second innings: 97 for 4 in 24.4 overs (Yogesh Nagar 30, Vineet Sharma 14 n o, Sawan Saini 13 n o, Pawan Chauhan 3 for 26).

Ganga School annex U-19 title

Ganga International School, Hiran Kudna trounced Shah Satnam Ji School, Sirsa 4-0 to annex the under-9 boys title in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) North Zone Hockey Tournament at the Ganga School ground.

Anoop, Satish, Mishu and Pradeep were the marksmen. In the under-19 girls section, Maharaja Agarsain Girls School, Sirsa beat Vidya Devi Jindal School, Sirsa 1-0. Agarsain School also won in the under-14 girls section when they defeated Vidya Devi Jindal School, Sirsa 3-0. Sameer, Bhagirathi (2) and Ritika Chaudhary were the goal-scorers.

The prizes were distributed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Satish Golcha. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Punjabi Bagh) Sheodeen Singh Yadav was the chief guest. Ganga School manager Sushil Kumar Gupta, chairman P. K. Chandla, principal H. Sraw, director of physical education O. P. Malhotra, P. K. Dagar and coach D. S. Jaggi were also present.

Shamsudeen hattricks for G V Raja

G V Raja Sports School, Thiruvanathapuram (Kerala) defeated Baruipur High School, West Bengal 4-2 in the Nehru Junior Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Monday. The West Bengal team forged ahead in the seventh minute when Sarique Islam scored a field goal in the seventh minute. Shamsudeen M pulled off the equaliser for G V Raja in the 20th minute as the half time score was tied at 1-1.

On resumption, Sarique Islam struck again to regain the lead for Baruipur. But once again, Shamsudeen came to the rescue of the Kerala team when he equalised to make it 2-2 and then scored his third goal to complete a fine hattrick. Jeeson Joseph scored the fourth goal for G V Raja. In other matches, Govt Boys School, Jashpur Nagar beat Govt Inter-College, Narender Nagar 10-0, T M Convent School, Bhopal trounced St. Xavier’s School, Muzaffarpur (Bihar) 4-0 while DAV School, Chandigarh beat Govt School, Jharsa (Haryana) 4-3 via tie-breaker after regulation play ended in a goalless draw. Jagdeep Singh, Sarwan Singh, Gursewak Singh and Daljit Singh were the goal-scorers for Chandigarh while Kuleep, Jai Bhagwan and Somvir accounted for Haryana’s goals. Md Taj Khan (2), Azam Baig and Javed Khan were the goal-getters for Bhopal.

Junior judokas lift five golds in Thai championship

New Delhi, October 20
The junior judokas of the country made an amazing collection of five gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the Thailand International Junior Judo Championship held at Chanthaburi (Thailand) from October 15 to 20.

Judo Federation of India president Jagdish Tytler said Ramasrey Yadav, who was among the gold medallists, was declared the best judoka of the championship. Mr Tytler said the Indian team also finished the overall runners-up of the championship. He said the Championship was approved by the Government of India as an exposure trip before the Junior Asian Judo Championship to be held in Delhi in November.

The gold medals were annexed by Ram Ashrey Yadav, Sazida Chana, Jina Devi, Virender Singh and Archana. T Rajesh Singh accounted for the lone silver medal while Ibetomi Devi, Harpreet Kaur and Vikender Singh bagged the bronze medals.

Ajay Kumar Vats and Satbir Singh accompanied the team as coaches while Umesh Kumar Singh went as referee.

Karun races on hot wheels

It was another kind of racing for speed merchant Karun Chandhok when he played the ‘Hot Wheels Track World’ with children on tracks at select stores of Delhi and Gurgaon. Mattel Toys had set up hot wheels tracks in these stores for kids to participate in the ‘Can you beat the champ’ contest. Karun Chandhok, fresh from his success at the British Formula 3 Championship, said it was a whole new experience for him after the hectic British F3 races.

Top players for golf

New Delhi, October 20
The second McDowell's Signature Club Golf Championship will tee off on October 25 in Mumbai in which over 3500 golfers from 26 clubs across the country will participate.

The Mumbai leg will be followed by tournaments at 18 other cities in the country over a period of 18 months.

The all-India final will be played at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort in Greater Noida. OSR
