Gill club win hockey league
Our Sports Reporter

Ludhiana, October 20
Gill Sports Club of Ghawadi quelled a strong challenge from Mata Sahib Kaur Academy of Jarkhar village before emerging champions in the Bibi Surjit Kaur Six-a-Side Hockey League Tournament organised at the Mata Sahib Kaur stadium, Jarkhar, near here, yesterday.

The final encounter turned out to be tough with both sides trying to unsettle each other. Though the academy dominated the proceedings in the first half, it failed to translate the chances which came its way.

After the first half, the club made repeated attacks. In the eighth minute, they forced a penalty stroke and Kulwinder Singh Tony made no mistake and put his side ahead.

However, academy players restored parity immediately. In the 10th minute, captain Pargat Singh gave a parallel pass to Sukhwinder Singh who rolled the ball into the net to level the score one-all. And five minutes before the long whistle, the club’s Mandeep Singh Gill got a pass from Simarjit Singh and scored a goal, making the score 2-1. The academy tried hard during the dying minutes of the match for the equaliser but fumbled twice at the goal mouth.

The club won the trophy. Mr Parminder Singh, vice-president, Shiv Sena (Bal Thackery), and Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu, chairman, Jarkhar Club, distributed prizes. Mr Parminder Singh gave Rs 5,100 to the organisers.

Mandeep Singh Gill of Ghawadi and Pargat Singh of Jarkhar were declared the highest scorer and man of the tournament, respectively. Ravinder Singh of Ghawadi was named the promising player, while Jattan Club was adjudged the best behaved team and received fair players trophy.
