Freeware that leNDs advantage to parents
Raman Mohan

MOST parents are worried about the Net usage by their children because of several considerations. Now there is a freeware that can control Net access on a PC. NetDisable is a small utility through which you can set time during which children will be unable to access the Internet though they will be able to do other work on the computer.

NetDisable (ND)

This is a simple Network control application. Its main purpose is to control children’s usage of the Internet. You can set time limits and between those limits, the pre-defined ports will be closed. You can simply define that between 1400 and 2200 hours, the computer can use the network, and from 2200 to 1400 hours the next day, the Internet (or other ports) will be closed. This is to help parents control the time their child spends on the Net. Some children can sit in front of the PC chatting the whole night and some parents are tired of controlling when the child should be on the network or not. ND is configured with an administrative password, which ensures that the application cannot be shut down without the password. You can’t even ‘Kill’ the process (using Windows NT Task manager) because the application isn’t listed there. This makes the ND completely safe to count on. ND keeps looking for open connections. If a connection is opened on one of the defined ports, outside the defined "Open" period, ND will close the connection as soon as it opens. ND keeps looking for system time changes, if the user has permission to change the system time changes, ND will go to Alert mode and close all connections. The alert can only be "disarmed" by entering the administration mode (password protected). This is to ensure that the user can’t just change the time to cheat the ND. You must start ndadmin.exe manually the first time. After you have started ndadmin.exe (located in the installation folder) you can right-click on the key icon in the system tray and click on administration. In the administration module, you can configure the NetDisable application to run as NT service (if the target machine is either NT or Windows 2000/XP). Download from www.gdsoftware.dk
