Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 18
The Department of Cardiology, Christian Medical College and Hospital, and Dr L.H. Lobo Memorial Trust organised the 21st Memorial Oration and Scientific Symposium on “Recent advances in acute coronary syndromes” here at the CMCH hospital auditorium today.

Dr L.H. Lobo Memorial Trust was started in the memory of Dr L.H. Lobo, a world renowned orthopaedic surgeon and professor and principal of the CMC for over 10 years. He is remembered for his exemplary commitment towards his profession. The trust aims at furthering the medical education.

Padma Bhushan Prof Khalilulla, Former, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology and Director, GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi, was the orator and chief guest. Dr Khalilulla has pioneered various cardiology interventional techniques in India. Recipient of many national and international awards for excellence in the field of medicine, he was awarded Padma Shree in 1984 and Padma Bhushan in 1990. He also received Rajiv Gandhi excellence award in 1994.

While delivering the 21st oration on “Newer approaches in management of cardiovascular diseases”, he stated that India was a country of vast medical incidence and Indians were now moving closer to the pattern comparable to the West. He discussed various case histories where interventional techniques had helped in the treatment. He stated that the non-surgical techniques were patient friendly, had little risk involved and required just a few days of hospitalisation. He said in India, due to lack of good primary health care, incidences of rheumatic cardiac disease were on an increase and the girls were more affected than the boys. He added that it was suspected that by year 2010 Indians would have the highest incidences of diabetes and heart disease all over the world.

Dr D.S. Gambhir, president of Cardiology Society of India and guest of honour for the oration, delivered the keynote address on the “Non-surgical management of CAD”. He spoke about the various technical developments of non-surgical interventional procedures. He also stated that the incidences of coronary diseases were higher among the South Asian population and in our country it could be contributed to the fast pace of life and changing trend towards westernised lifestyle and eating habits. He added that genetically also Indians were more prone to heart diseases and more research should be carried out on these lines.

Dr Mohan Nair, visiting faculty for CMCH, spoke about arrhythmia and heart failure management. Dr Rajeev Agarwal spoke about the role of stations in acute coronary syndromes. Dr T.M. Jaison, Professor Cardiology, CMCH, spoke about the cardiac MRI — the newest diagnostic facility for cardiology.
