91st session of Indian science cong on Jan 4

The 91st session of the Indian Science Congress Association will focus on the theme of “Science and Society in 21st Century—Quest for Excellence”. The congress is scheduled for January 4, 2004. This was announced by Prof Asis Datta, president of the association, while addressing a press conference here today.

The exposition focuses on the theme of the congress and brings together application of science and technology in private and public sectors. It also displays advancements and achievements of the scientific research institutes and government departments. Along with scientists and academicians, people and specially schoolchildren are encouraged to visit the exposition. The display of Prithvi, radar systems and missiles are great attractions each year.

A separate pavilion is dedicated to a single stream of science every year. This year the focus of the pavilion will be “Agrovision—New Frontiers in Bio-Technology”. Every year the “Pride of India” event at the congress showcases the development in science through different pavilions. Dr Vikram Sarabhai, a great scientist, was portrayed last year. This time the pavilion will feature either the life of Dr J.C. Bose or Dr Homi. J.Bhabha.

Participation is expected from different states all over the country. Besides, Professor Datta, Prof N.K.Ganguly, Director of PGIMER, was also present on the occasion.

Students at their creative best

Nearly 200 prizes were given to students at the annual exhibition and prize distribution function of the junior wing of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today.

The function began with the inauguration of the science and social science exhibition where models made by students on different subjects were displayed. While students explained the working of science models, illustrations on charts, also prepared by them, gave elaborate details to the visitors. The models made by students were based on topics of “Energy”, “Science in everyday life”, “Nutrition”.

The cultural programme began with the school shabad “Deh Shiva Var Mohe” followed by a Saraswati vanadana. A Rajasthani dance “Ghumar” was presented by girls of Class III. The annual report was read by Ms Nirmal Isha Dass, a teacher of the junior wing.

The chief guest, Justice V.K. Bali of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, gave away prizes to the children while the Director-Principal, Mr D.S. Bedi, presented the vote of thanks.

Founder’s day celebrated

An exhibition displaying art and craft work of students, models of science, accounts and physical education marked the 23rd founder’s day celebrations at Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, here today. The celebrations began with the lighting of the lamp by the Chairman of the school, Mr T.R. Sethi. Students of the SAS Nagar branch of the school also participated in the exhibition.

Science models on control of air pollution by removal of toxic gases, air fire alarm to control fire on time, biogas plant for producing gas from waste material like dung proved to be educative to not only students but came in for appreciation from the parents as well.

Creativity of the students was the hallmark of the art and craft display. Children showed their best at decorative floating candles, glass paintings and doll making among others. Students also made tattoos and tile painting using bread, carving, emboss glass colour and stickers, decorative dolls in Indian attires and pot painting with waste cloth, silver and gold dust. While the art and craft displays were prepared by over 200 students who had participated in a workshop conducted at the school, over 300 students prepared the science displays made during the academic session.

Quiz contest

The team comprising Ruby, Puja Saggi and Krishnan of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, won the inter-school history quiz contest held at DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

While the second place was bagged by Bhavna, Indu and Kuldeep Pathak of Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya, Sector 25, the third prize went to the girls of IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, consisting of Rashmi, Harjeet and Hina in the seven round quiz on various historical movements in the year 1857-1947. Organised by the Bharateeya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, the quiz saw a participation from 12 city schools.

Exhibition held

Creativity ruled the day at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, at the art and craft exhibition, here today. While an on-the-spot painting contest was held, the craft display by students included pot painting, wall hangings, relief work and colourful wind chimes.

Students of the junior section had on display finger painting, paper craft, decorative candles and earthen lamps.

Divali hungama

Divali Hungama — an educational fete got a wonderful start with much fanfare and excitement at Sri Guru Harkrishna School, Sector 38, here today. The fete that included a host of exciting activities provided an opportunity to the children to learn in a fun-filled atmosphere.

Other major attractions of the fete included an IT information centre, Fun games corner, and stalls on “Save the earth”, “Technology Trendz” and “Global trendz”.

Mr H.M. Gill, eminent Punjabi music director and Pt. Subhash Chander Ghosh, disciple of Sarod Samrat Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was the guest of honour in this session. The fete was inaugurated by Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI (Schools).

Rai School wins aero quiz

Chandigarh, October 18
Students of Rai School, New Delhi, won the AVI-Oil National Aero Quiz final organised by the Aeronautical Society of India to mark 100 years of aviation here today. The winning team comprised Subramanaya Gautam and Vikramaditya Singh.

The team from National Junior School, Bangalore, comprising Vasuki Prasad and Aditya Menon came second. Two other teams from A.V. Meiyappan Higher Secondary School, Chennai, and Bhavan’s Adarsh Vidyalya, Kochi, also made it to the finals, which were held at Government College, Sector 11.

A total of 10 teams had contested the semifinals held here yesterday. They were from Agra, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Kochi, Mumbai, Nashik and Sunabeda.

The topics of the quiz were aviation, general knowledge, current affairs and the independence struggle.

Paper postponed

The National Institute of Open Schooling in a press note said here today that the paper of secondary social science scheduled for October 20 had been cancelled. It will now be conducted on November 20 at the same centres.

HC men seen carrying files outside premises

If allegations in a complaint by a Punjab and Haryana High Court official are to be believed, a Superintendent and another high court employee were seen carrying official files outside the court premises on a holiday.

According to sources in the Police Department, a high court official, who was returning home after a walk at the lake, spotted the two employees coming from the side of government houses. One of them, the official reportedly claimed, was related to a former officer of the high court, now on deputation with the UT Administration.

The official, as per the sources, added in his complaint that the high court’s suspended Additional Registrar had been seen visiting the UT officer’s house at odd hours.

A senior police officer, when contacted, refused to comment on the matter. He added that the authenticity of the report was being verified.

Meanwhile, the official reportedly alleged that the two employees on separate scooters on spotting him accelerated towards the high court. The official asserted that he tried to contact senior high court authorities, but in vain, the sources said. The official, as per the sources, added that he finally managed to get the mobile number of a senior high court official, who reportedly told him to give it in writing, which was done.

Though the high court authorities refused to comment, a senior officer revealed that the matter had been referred to the police.

Bar Council’s notice to Cabinet minister

The Punjab and Haryana Bar Council today issued a show cause notice to a Cabinet Minister, Punjab, Harnam Dass Johar, for not surrendering his advocate licence to it after becoming a minister in the Punjab Government, as required under the rule of the Bar Council.

Mr Johar had enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council on December 14, 1967.

The Council has given a show cause notice to Mr Johar, stating that as to why the proceeding of professional misconduct be not initiated against him for cancelling his enrolment certificate.

In a press note issued by the Chairman of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council, Mr Mukesh Berry, stated that it had come to the notice of the Bar Council that Mr Harnam Dass Johar, have not surrendered his enrollment certificate to the Bar Council. Earlier, he remained a Cabinet Minister and Speaker of the Assembly but he never surrendered his enrolment certificate to the Bar Council.

Giving details about the rule of the Bar Council, Mr Berry said: “every advocate should notify to the Bar Council from time to time any change of address and all suspension or resumption of practice. Every such intimation to the Bar Council shall contain the roll number of the advocate, date of his enrolment, his address and other necessary particular”.

Mr Berry further added that as per rule 6 of the Bar Council a breach of the rule 5 or any undertaking given in pursuance thereof shall amounts to professional misconduct. Thus Mr Harnam Dass Johar had failed to abide by his undertaking of December 6, 1967, given in the application form at the time of his enrolment.

‘Kikran de Phul’ released

The pain of Partition was re-lived once again at the book release function organised by the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi at Chandigrh Arts Council Auditorium in Sector 34 here today. The book “Kikran de Phul” which was released by Gen Himmat Singh Gill, Chairman of the akademi, marked the two-day celebrations organised by the Akademi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of City Beautiful.

Narrating the plot of her novel, Sudarshan Kaur said the story revolved around the pain and struggle of common people seen mostly through a woman’s eye. “But the message I wanted to convey through my story is that though common man’s struggles often go unnoticed, it is important to have faith in oneself ,” she says.

The akademi also organised a multilingual kavi sammelan in which as many as 15 eminent poets of Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu took part. The Sammelan was inaugurated by General Gill who also recited one of his poems in English “Warriors” which he dedicated to an Army officer who had sacrificed his life during the Indo - China war in 1962.
