BCM school wins dance trophy

Ludhiana, October 8
The entire campus of Kundan Vidya Mandir reverberated with the sounds of ghungroos, drum beats and folk music as 15 schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) participated in Sahodaya Dance Competition here today.

The lights, sound, music and decor of the school provided a perfect ambience for the competition. The dance contest was held under two categories — classical and folk. While 15 teams participated in the folk dance competition, only eight of them took part in classical dance contest.

The classical dance teams kept the audience spellbound with their rhythmic footwork for about three hours. All teams presented items based on a theme. The folk dancers delighted the audience with their mesmerising gyrations and colourful attire. Ms Inderjeet Gill Vashisht, former Principal of Government College for Women, was the chief guest on the occasion. She was welcomed by the Iron Eagle Club of the school. The judges were Ms Shubhniti Saini and Ms Sangeeta Khushwaha.

In the classical dance categories, the first prize was bagged by the team of DAV Public School. The second prize was clinched by the team from USPC Jain Senior Secondary School. The third prize was shared by the teams of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, and Kundan Vidya Mandir. The prize for the best individual dance was bagged by Bhiva Bharti of USPC Jain School.

Among the teams for folk dance categories, the first prize was won by BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar. The team from Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Public School, Phillaur, won the second prize and the host team won the third prize. The best dancer prize in this category was won by Richa of Kundan Vidya Mandir. The overall dance trophy went to the team of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shatri Nagar.

Teachers’ body hails appointment of 
Dr Manmohan Singh

Prof Jaspal Singh, general secretary of the Punjab Government College Teachers’ Association has appreciated the state government for transferring Dr Manmohan Singh to Higher Education Department as Secretary. Dr Manmohan Singh has recorked as a lecturer, Principal and DPICC and is well-versed with the functioning of this department.

The outgoing Principal Secretary, Higher Education Mr N. S. Rattan, had tried to streamline the department against many odds generally created by the Department of Finance. Now, Dr Manmohan Singh, in spite of having a short tenure, is expected to carry many things to their logical end, he said.

The main demands are recruitment of lecturers, Principals and librarians by the PPSC, Reimplementation of UGC notification in toto which includes giving the benefit of past service, feeder-grade service and the relaxation in refresher courses up to December 31, 2004, and benefit of advance increments for all left-out M.Phil and Ph.D. holders.

NSS volunteers taught vocational skills

The 10-day NSS camp being held at the Khalsa College for Women concluded yesterday and a cultural programme was organised by the volunteers on the occasion. They displayed their talent in the form of self-composed poems, songs and through dance items and a choreography depicting the “cheating” in the present education system.

A whole lot of activities marked the last five days of the camp during which a two-day medical camp was organised at Sunet village. The NSS volunteers were taught the preparation of jams, squashes, pickles and juices. They were also imparted traffic management training by a traffic instructor at the children’s traffic training park in Model Town. The volunteers not only learnt various skills from experts but also taught their fellow students various skills.

A personality development wave was created amongst the volunteers by Ms Amrit Mangat, former Principal of Ryan International, St. Xavier’s Group and also an educational consultant, who also provided career guidance to the volunteers.

Mr Raj Kumar, a physiotherapist provided useful tips to the NSS volunteers on maintaining correct posture while sitting, standing and lying down.

Dr Raman, a cosmetologist, performed skin analysis of several volunteers and provided useful tips for a healthy skin. Also on the final day, Ms Madhu Bala, Youth Officer, NSS inspired and motivated the volunteers for selfless service.

Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana congratulated the NSS team and appreciated the efforts.

Engg college gets 18 more seats for M Tech

The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved 18 more seats for admission to MTech (computer science and engineering) at Guru Nanak Engineering College from this session.

The college had earlier received an approval for increasing its seats from 10 to 25 for all its MTech courses.

The college had received the rare distinction of offering maximum number of streams under MTech in North India when it got approval to start MTech (Food technology) and MTech (VLSI design) this year.

The college has also been offered to start a study centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University from the current session. Carnegie Melon University has given it Rs 25 lakh for the purchase of a scanner that would be kept in its library.

Recently, two of its faculty members were shortlisted for the National Young Engineer Award as well as the Best Technical Project Award. Papers of 12 faculty members have been accepted for international conferences in recent months.

Inter-school maths test on Nov 9

The regional corporate office of Castle Education Centre, Sarabha Nagar, will organise its sixth open mathematics test on November 9 at Guru Nanak Public School.

Stating this in a press note, Ms Rima Juneja, vice-president, Operations, said students of Classes IX and X of schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) would be eligible to participate. She said the test would be of 90 minutes duration and carry 100 objective type questions of mathematics to judge the logic, reasoning, quantitative skills and mental aptitude of the students.

Ms Juneja said the result of the contest would be declared in December. The winner of the contest would get a gold medal, 21’’ colour TV and some other sponsored gifts. The first unner up would get a silver medal, a portable stereo and sponsored gifts. The second runner up would get a bronze medal, camera and other gifts.

Ms Juneja said a special prize would be given to the “School with best performance”. The top three students of Class IX and three toppers of the Punjab School Education Board would be given special prizes. The top 250 students would be given merit certificates. All participating students would receive trophies. She said the last date for submitting forms was October 26.

Lok Adalat for traffic challans on Oct 18

A special Lok Adalat for clearing the backlog of thousands of traffic-challan cases will be organised on October 18 by the District Legal Services Authority under the supervision of its Chairman, Mr Baldev Singh, District and Sessions Judge, Ludhiana.

Giving the details, Mr Baldev Singh said nine benches would be constituted for disposing the challan cases and giving relief to the public. The Lok Adalat will be held in New Judicial Complex and will start at 10 am.

He informed that summons would be sent to the persons whose challans have been pending in the courts since April 5, 2003, with the assistance of the police. The responsibility of serving summons has been entrusted upon the PCR men.

It may be recalled that earlier also a special Lok Adalat was held in the first week of April 2003, in which 15,267 challan cases were disposed of. Even traffic violators were given concessions.

The District and Sessions Judge has appealed to the general public to take benefit of this opportunity. Apart for this quarterly Lok Adalat will be held in Jagraon on November 3, in Ludhiana on November 9, in Khanna on November 15 and in Samrala on November 13. A Labour Lok Adalat will be held in Ludhiana on December 5.

An affair with Bharatanatyam

The Nrutya Bharti School of Dance is probably the oldest and one of the few schools of dance being run by Pinky Chaudhary, who is also the founder member of this institution and has been running the organisation for the past 12 years in the city.

Pinky, who originally hails from Bangalore, has been inspired by Bharatanatyam in particular because it is one of the oldest dance styles and also because in essence no other dance form can surpass it and few can equal it in grace, consummation, richness, variety of movements, rhyme and music, sophistication and tenderness. Nrutya Bharti, is holding a workshop in which as many as 90 students are participating. It is being chaired by Dr Shreedhara A.R. who combines two professions of medicine and dance. He was trained in Bharatanatyam by Narmada and Padmabhushan Kalanidhi Narayanka.

He has performed all over India and abroad and has won appreciation. Apart from solo performances he has performed with some of the leading dance performers of the country like Hema Malini, Pratibha Prahlad. He is also actively involved in theatre, TV and cinema.

Pinky has been learning Bharatanatyam since the age of five years and has done “insharred” in Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of Shilpa Patel, Phalgun Patel, Reena Rawat and Madhubhai Patel. She has also attended numerous workshops under the guidance of Mrinalini Sarabhai, Malika Sarabhai and Yamini Krishnamurthy. Her centre is affiliated to the Pracheen Kala Kendra and is also teaching dance in Sacred Heart Convent School.

As a specialist in community health Dr Shreedhara A.R. has won laurels in the field of development and is also a specialist in yoga.

Cultural bonanza for city, courtesy NZCC

The North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC) and Punjab Tourism Development Corporation will organise a cultural bonanza from October 10 to 12 in which more than 60 artistes from all over India will participate. This was stated by Mr Gamdoor Singh, in charge Amaltas Hotel, Ludhiana. Besides the Punjabi artistes, several eminent artistes from other parts of the country will perform on the occasion. The event will be held at Amaltas Hotel.

A barkha dance performance by Beena Singh from Uttar Pradesh, ancient Sindhu heritage choreography by Anila Sunder, eminent artistes from Mumbai, dhali dance from West Bengal will be the main attractions of the event.

In addition to the above tipri dance of Patiala, ghoomar of Haryana will also be performed by reputed artistes. This was revealed by Mr R.T. Jindal, Director, North Zone Cultural Centre, Chandigarh. A craft bazaar will be set up in which craftsmen from different states will participate and display their works.

‘Mirch Masala’ to be presented on Oct 11

Art Theatre, Ludhiana, will present a comedy “Mirch Masala” on October 11 at 7.30 pm at the open-air theatre of Punjabi Bhavan here. The show is being organised in collaboration with the Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana.

In a press statement H.S. Randhawa, director of the play, has said the comedy is written by Jatinder Brar. He said in the present world of satellite channels, people are fed up with the vulgar programmes on the Western pattern.

The play has been prepared keeping in mind that city residents get clean and wholesome entertainment. Raj Kumar has composed the music. Known artistes of Ludhiana theatre like Parshotam Lal, Chamkaur Singh, Raj, Premjeet, Gauri Sood, Preeti, Sukhmandeep Prince, Hardip, Kuldeep, Purbsa, Harpreetpal, Satpal Sagar, Rajinder Jhande, Ramneek Kumadia, and Narinder, are also associated with the production. Dr Surjit Patar, president of the Akademi, will be the chief guest.
