Teachers’ body hails appointment of Ludhiana, October 8 The outgoing Principal Secretary, Higher Education Mr N. S. Rattan, had tried to streamline the department against many odds generally created by the Department of Finance. Now, Dr Manmohan Singh, in spite of having a short tenure, is expected to carry many things to their logical end, he said. The main demands are recruitment of lecturers, Principals and librarians by the PPSC, Reimplementation of UGC notification in toto which includes giving the benefit of past service, feeder-grade service and the relaxation in refresher courses up to December 31, 2004, and benefit of advance increments for all left-out M.Phil and Ph.D. holders. |
NSS volunteers taught vocational skills
Ludhiana, October 8 A whole lot of activities marked the last five days of the camp during which a two-day medical camp was organised at Sunet village. The NSS volunteers were taught the preparation of jams, squashes, pickles and juices. They were also imparted traffic management training by a traffic instructor at the children’s traffic training park in Model Town. The volunteers not only learnt various skills from experts but also taught their fellow students various skills. A personality development wave was created amongst the volunteers by Ms Amrit Mangat, former Principal of Ryan International, St. Xavier’s Group and also an educational consultant, who also provided career guidance to the volunteers. Mr Raj Kumar, a physiotherapist provided useful tips to the NSS volunteers on maintaining correct posture while sitting, standing and lying down. Dr Raman, a cosmetologist, performed skin analysis of several volunteers and provided useful tips for a healthy skin. Also on the final day, Ms Madhu Bala, Youth Officer, NSS inspired and motivated the volunteers for selfless service. Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana congratulated the NSS team and appreciated the efforts. |

Engg college gets 18 more seats for M Tech Ludhiana, October8 The college had earlier received an approval for increasing its seats from 10 to 25 for all its MTech courses. The college had received the rare distinction of offering maximum number of streams under MTech in North India when it got approval to start MTech (Food technology) and MTech
(VLSI design) this year. The college has also been offered to start a study centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University from the current session. Carnegie Melon University has given it Rs 25 lakh for the purchase of a scanner that would be kept in its library. Recently, two of its faculty members were shortlisted for the National Young Engineer Award as well as the Best Technical Project Award. Papers of 12 faculty members have been accepted for international conferences in recent months. |

Inter-school maths test on Nov 9 Ludhiana, October 8 Stating this in a press note, Ms Rima Juneja, vice-president, Operations, said students of Classes IX and X of schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) would be eligible to participate. She said the test would be of 90 minutes duration and carry 100 objective type questions of mathematics to judge the logic, reasoning, quantitative skills and mental aptitude of the students. Ms Juneja said the result of the contest would be declared in December. The winner of the contest would get a gold medal, 21’’ colour TV and some other sponsored gifts. The first unner up would get a silver medal, a portable stereo and sponsored gifts. The second runner up would get a bronze medal, camera and other gifts. Ms Juneja said a special prize would be given to the “School with best performance”. The top three students of Class IX and three toppers of the Punjab School Education Board would be given special prizes. The top 250 students would be given merit certificates. All participating students would receive trophies. She said the last date for submitting forms was October 26. |
An affair with Bharatanatyam Ludhiana, October 8 Pinky, who originally hails from Bangalore, has been inspired by Bharatanatyam in particular because it is one of the oldest dance styles and also because in essence no other dance form can surpass it and few can equal it in grace, consummation, richness, variety of movements, rhyme and music, sophistication and tenderness. Narayanka. He has performed all over India and abroad and has won appreciation. Apart from solo performances he has performed with some of the leading dance performers of the country like Hema
Malini, Pratibha Prahlad. He is also actively involved in theatre, TV and
cinema. Pinky has been learning Bharatanatyam since the age of five years and has done “insharred” in Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of Shilpa Patel, Phalgun Patel, Reena Rawat and Madhubhai Patel. She has also attended numerous workshops under the guidance of Mrinalini
Sarabhai, Malika Sarabhai and Yamini Krishnamurthy. Her centre is affiliated to the Pracheen Kala Kendra and is also teaching dance in Sacred Heart Convent School. As a specialist in community health Dr Shreedhara

bonanza for city, courtesy NZCC Ludhiana, October 8 A barkha dance performance by Beena Singh from Uttar Pradesh, ancient Sindhu heritage choreography by Anila Sunder, eminent artistes from Mumbai, dhali dance from West Bengal will be the main attractions of the event. In addition to the above tipri dance of Patiala, ghoomar of Haryana will also be performed by reputed artistes. This was revealed by Mr R.T. Jindal, Director, North Zone Cultural Centre, Chandigarh. A craft bazaar will be set up in which craftsmen from different states will participate and display their works. |

He said in the present world of satellite channels, people are fed up with the vulgar programmes on the Western pattern. The play has been prepared keeping in mind that city residents get clean and wholesome entertainment. Raj Kumar has composed the music. Known artistes of Ludhiana theatre like Parshotam Lal, Chamkaur Singh, Raj, Premjeet, Gauri Sood, Preeti, Sukhmandeep Prince, Hardip, Kuldeep, Purbsa, Harpreetpal, Satpal Sagar, Rajinder Jhande, Ramneek Kumadia, and Narinder, are also associated with the production. Dr Surjit Patar, president of the Akademi, will be the chief guest. |
